Maya for Package Design Problem

#1

Hello.

I have a task to create a package design which is to be realistic and with a label on.
I’ve created high-dimensional label images in illustrator (containing logo&text) and made an attempt to “pull” them on the 3d carton model in Maya as a texture, using texture mapping.

However, even after changing quality and other render settings the label (especially letters) looked dull and a bit vague on the render image.
I tried to change the dimensions of original label images (saved in png), but that didn’t do any help.

I’m wondering if there are any ways of making such textures look better after rendering.

I would be grateful for your advices.

Best regards,
Don

I think your best bet is to bring your 3D rendering into Photoshop and apply the Illustrator graphics on top of it. If you have decent Photoshop skills you can make it look good from there.

Otherwise, people here will want to know more info. Lighting, materials, geometry, etc. Post the file if you can.

I’m not a Maya user, but:

  1. Have you tried rendering at a really high resolution (e.g. 4000 x 3000 pixels or more) and then scaling the image down in Photoshop? That may help you get a “crisper” look on the label.

  2. Also, have you tried to make the label texture “emissive” - i.e. the label gives off light during rendering, driven by the label texture, and doesn’t need to be lit from other light sources in the scene. This is really easy to do in Cinema 4D. I don’t know how you would do it in Maya.

Cinema 4D also has settings for how “soft” textures appear in render (under “anti aliasing” sampling settings).

Surely Maya must have a similar anti-aliasing setting which determines how “soft” or “sharp” textures on the label look?

If that fails… try asking in the Maya subforum:

Be sure to tell people what rendering engine you are using to render (Mental Ray? VRay? Other renderer?)

I hope that helps…

Dear Cygnusrk727,

Thank you for your help. As long as I’m not that much skilled in Photoshop, I find it a bit complicated to somehow bring the lables on 3d render. However, I surely will try to do so, and hope to achive a quit realistic result.

Dear Artsyboy,

Thank you for your reply.
I’ve tried the emission analogue, but that did everything worse. However, I changed the Common Image settings to more qualitable and played on with some other render settings (incl. anti-aliasing), both Maya Software and mental ray.
Finaly I have achieved a good quality and realistic render image.
Again, thank you.

Best regards,
Don

Whick filter type do you use on your texture node in Maya ?
Try none.
