maya and vray production workflow

#1

Hi everyone!
I’m new to vray and trying to setup several photorealistic outdoor lighting scenarios. Is using vray sun and sky the best way of going about this or is there some better way of achieving this?

I’m looking for a method that will give the best results for post production level of quality-ie not achitecture/previs, something which can be comped in with live action plates. The reason why I’ve been looking into vray sun and sky is because vray doesn’t seem to have its own version of a directional light inside of maya. I can use a maya directional light with my own hdr but theres no way of upping the subdivs/sampling that you would get with a vray light and it won’t produce shadows with a falloff (ie for an evening scenario)-which the vray sun seems to have an option for. Because vray sky only gives 3 presets, I was hoping to use Dave Girard’s method for overriding the presets with my hdr but I was wondering if this is used in production or whether there’s a better way of doing it?

Another quick question I’d like to add: what is the difference between the renderpasses RawLight and TotalRawLight? As I understand it RawLight can be multiplied with the diffuse pass to get the lighting pass but if thats the case then why would you need the TotalRawLight pass? ( I tried looking this up in the Chaos documentation but there didn’t seem to be anything about it.)

Thanks in advance!
