Max or Maya (or Other)?

#1

Hi,

I’m facing the old choice, whether I want to learn Max or Maya. I’d prefer to pick one to dive into first, rather than taking a “try 'em both!” approach. I intend to use my ultimate choice for my own projects, rather than trying to get a job. The projects I want to do tend to be more real-time (i.e., games) than pre-rendered, but I wouldn’t rule out movies, either. But one thing I do know is that my focus is going to be on animation, not modeling, texturing, rendering, or effects. Basically I want whichever package offers more power and flexibility in terms of animation. Complicating the question is the fact that I’ll grab whatever tools are available that will add to that power and flexibility. So, for example, if I can get more power and flexibility with Max + Motionbuilder than I can with Maya + Motionbuilder, then I’ll use Max + Motionbuilder, even if Maya beats Max in the standalone test.

To be more specific, I’m really interested in rigging, morph targets, retargeting, physics, procedural animation, working with mocap, etc.

Any advice? Feel free to talk about other packages, too. If you think I should be looking at a different package altogether, I’m all ears.

But detail is king; if you know of an in-depth discussion of this topic, feel free to post it.

Thanks in advance.
