Matts series of mattes

#1

Hey guys!

It has been a long time since I have posted in any forums so I figured its time to get my head out of the sand and be apart of the community again. How is everyone doing??

Most of my time lately is doing artwork for video games and the ideas are starting to pile up so I think its time to start creating some mattes I have in mind on my free time.

What I plan to do is around 6-8 matte paintings that are based on a theme. Right now the theme I have in mind is biological/natural networks but the twist is that I want these networks to be represented by human society. I know that is probably a confusing explanation but I will explain it better with the idea I have for the first matte.

The first matte I have planned is a scene that looks like the grand canyon but the rock faces are actually very condensed shanty towns, the rocks that break off the sides of the cliffs will be garbage piling up and the river will be sewage.

Not all my ideas are bleak but that’s the first one anyways.

Also, no drawings yet but I will start on my first concept while I do client work tonight. I am going to reserve the next post so I can put all the final works there when the time comes but I look forward to every ones feedback and I hope you guys can help me flush out some ideas. This will be a long process and may take a long time but but its something that has been on my mind for a while now

wondered where you was?

looking forward to it, your idea about the shanty canyon sounds great, there was an interesting story in 2000ad Judge Dredd about something similar. The idea that the people in the upper parts of the blocks chucked out there luxury goods and cardboard boxes and rubbish, the people in the lower part of the mega block would make shanty towns out of this,

reminds me of the barrios in Rio,

looking forward to what you come up with

nice to hear from you again

Hey gitchas, Thanks for the comment! I didn’t get a chance to check out your blog yet but will soon

Hey Rockhoppermedia! Yeah for some reason I haven’t been on forums at all really in a long while, really made no sense. Working from home is very isolating and its been a bummer not having anyone to “talk shop” with and then realized that that’s what these forums are great for. That and also getting me in the mood to do personal work again.

I will have to go check out that movie and see how they approached it. I did a concept a long while ago that is similar to this but the visuals were based off circuit boards that’s in my cgtalk portfolio. Hopefully I can improve upon the idea

One thing I am thinking about doing is making sure that I work on some of these mattes in a way that I can import them into UDK and use them as backdrops, hopefully animated. Should be fun to learn

Last night I did a bit of reference gathering and started playing around with some color compositions, today I will start on some very basic designs. I plan to have a very simple composition for these images.

Will post more soon

Here is a quick concept sketch from tonight. I will probably do some adjusting to it tomorrow to improve the composition and color, but so far I am happy with it and I am looking forward to doing some improvements. Any input would be great

Concept looks cool, I liked it:-) I think foreground looks little empty, may be u should add some more visual elements especially left side. Otherwise overall comp is good.

Hey Gitchas thanks for the comment and I agree 100%. I am actually planning to redesign that whole side. I am thinking that the whole left side will actually be a huge building face that goes further into the background, shanty towns will work there way up the sides as well. Tonight I am busy with client work but hopefully tomorrow I can put a few hours into it and will post the updates
