Matte Painting #2 - WIP

#1

Haven´t got a clue of what to call these threads/paintings, so I stick to numbers for now.
Another try at mattepainting from me. The concept art looks too tropical atm, but my goal is a non tropical look.
Other than that I have no idea of what the end result will be.

Guess I have to face the fact that this matte painting currently is nothing more than a nice landscape photo. :hmm:

I´m almost done with patching the different photo into a base landscape. The sky is dull. Just extended it from the layer in the back.

I need to rethink this one, and see if I can come up with some cool 3D stuff, to spice up this one.
Here´s the update without any mayor color and light tweaks.

Hey jorust

This is actually looking really good and the photos are well integrated. Also a strong composition.
I dont think its ever as simple as just adding something in 3d will spice it up or any objects for that matter. What makes a matte painting great in my opinion is how well it helps tell a story. Maybe before you go and start trying to add in new objects it would be best to maybe think about why you are doing a scene with the hills and lake. Think up a situation and let that help you come up with new ideas that will help the composition but also add a lot more interest without having to go overboard with heavy details.

Not sure that helps but i hope

Keep up the good work

Hey there!

Great work, it’s looking really cool.

I agree with Matt. If you have a back story it will help immensely. I think there’s heaps you can do without adding 3D, esp if you don’t plan a big camera move on it.
I think finding the story is more important at this stage - it’s a great image you’re making so keep going.

(I often find a paragraph or 2 from a book helps with a back story or just make one up!).

If you felt like really working on the atmosphere maybe work on the sky, time of day etc and use color correction and so forth.
:applause:

Thank you for your replies. Much appreciated.

Good point about the story. It´s hard to take it further without any clue of what the whole scene is about.
I started this as a technical exercise but I will try to finish it as a nice matte painting.

Thanks.

It looks like it will be a cool addition to your portfolio - I really like the sky you had in the first post by the way!

Thanks Felicity.
I´ve been photographing landscapes for more that 15 years, so I have lots of skies to choose from. Here´s an update with a better sky.

Still not decided what to do with this one though…

that one look great I like the feeling on this image, you did a great work and attention to detail, I like the clouds as well but I think they look a little bit stretched horizontally , or is it just me? hehe

#11

Thanks jamesvfx.
You´re right about the clouds. I stretched them too much horizontally. Will fix that
