Hello again, this time I want to figure out materiels and making textures in AM. When I first tried the Fire pot project in AM I found the rendering would take forever resulting in Windows XP Hanging. Nearly all the models that I download off AM related sites have models that have short scenes, with out any action that take days to render (if you have the time and patience to see the result). I have found making my own material or textures I can reduce some attributes of the material in order to reduce render time. I imagine the people that made the models know what they were doing. I have vaguely heard of something called net rendering and a dongle. These are tools I am told speed up render time but I cant seem to find the relevant information on purchasing a dongle or how the whole thing works. AM has a download for net rendering that asks you for the key to unlock it when you first try to open it. I still dont know were to buy the key from. I was amazed by the animator Jeff Lews (http://www.jefflew.com) Killer Bean Movie that took him 2 years to make and had 2 months render time. I cant make out why some of the old technologies seem better then the new ones.
Materials
Contact support@hash.com and ask about purchasing a dongle. It’s basically just a little (and rather expensive;)) hardware key that’ll let you use the net version of A:M. Personally, I wouldn’t bother with it unless I had a renderfarm or something.
Thanks Hook But thats is not what I asked. I want to know how it is possable for some people to have tons of effects on there models and still manage to render them and expect other people to use them on there projects
It seems like you have unusually long render times. What kind of system are you using? You should make sure your multipass and antialiasing settings are not cranked up too high, these are usually a cause of loooong render times. Have you tried rendering out your anims at low res. e.g. 320x200.
As far as I know, complex materials will slow your render down, but will usually only kill your render time if you have close detailed shots of complex surfaces. Are there any volumetric materials/lights in these scenes? They are a killer too. And while you’re at it, don’t have anymore reflection bounces than you need.
As for net render, that’s an add on application that allows you to render across a network. So if you have a couple of old PCs lying about the house you can connect them and each will render out a certain number of frames of your animation. I guess it’s a good investment if you are serious about a project.
Good Luck!
