Masks and/or Mattes

#1

I’m trying to animate an interior spaceship cockpit scene, where you can see a moving starfield through the window.

I placed a .png of the starfield on top of the cockpit image, then drew a mask over the starfield to match the shape of the cockpit windows. It looks great.

However, whenever I try to animate the starfield, by using the position transform control, to move it from left to right to make it look like the starfield is moving, the whole mask moves along with the .png of the starfield, rather than staying in place where the window ought to be.

Maybe I should be using mattes instead?

Can anyone give me some idea as to what I’m doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!

As you indicated, using a track matte would probably be the easiest way to do this. You could draw a mask on a white solid layer, set that layer as the track matte for the starfield layer, and then animate the starfield layer’s position.

or you could have just pre-composed the starfield layer, draw the window mask on the comp itself, and move the starfield layer inside the pre-comp.

altough working with the track matte will give you more control and comfort.

Hello My Friends…
Or You Could Do Something That Don’t Need Any Masking o Using Of Mattes.
You Could Render The Spaceship With The Window Area Transparent And The Use It. Then You Put The StarField Pic Under The The SpaceShip And You’re Ready To Go!
Good Luck
