Masking in After Effects HELP !!!

#1

Hi there,

Am a uni student and making a fake news story as part of my assignment. I’ve made the scrolling news at the bottom with the time and logos and newsline. With the scrolling news at the bottom once it keeps carrying on it shows through onto the behind video. If u didnt get that then heres a image of my work. The green rectangle i drew out is the area where I dont want the text to appear. Am sure if u watch the news u can see the scroll text disappearing before it hits the edge of the screen.

If anyone knows how to do this then can you please explain…deadline is coming soon so i need to sort the problem out.

Thanks in advance,

Raj !

Hi raj, i am not Sure, and not Advance Motion designer, but i think i can help you…
This can be done by masking and feather at the end of the title. try it ( because i use this concept for my flash animation) or make a new obj in ps with to the new bar set like this

hi,

two things you can try. hope this helps.

  1. precomp your line of text. animate the scrolling text inside the precomp going from one end to the other. add a mask on the precomp.

or

  1. animate the scrolling text from one end to the other. add a piece of the ribbon that the text is hovering over on both ends.

Hi there,

Originally the line of text was a psd photoshop file so I got rid of that and made a line of text in AE. I then masked it on the side and it worked BUT…because the mask is made inside the text options (meaning where Transform and Text are) it moves along with the text. I need it to stay on the side but its just stuck to the end of the text line.
I then tried to make a shape with 0% opacity and put in a mask but it didnt hide the text (don’t know why).
After that I made a null object but the same thing happened and the mask wouldn’t work. I think I know why.
I seriously thought this would of been straight forward enough, just to mask off the sides but bloody hell…can’t figure a way out.
I’d extend the whole thing so it reaches to the edge of the screen but this is exactly how it looks on the news channel so if only I have to I’ll resize to fit the edge.

Anymore more ideas before I have to compromise the AE work !?

Hi there, I understand the idea of wht you are saying but I don’t know if or how it can be done in After Effects. I will give it a go and let you know if it works,

thanks !

ok,

try the first one i suggested.

  1. animate the line of text going from end to end (no words in the beginning, no words in the end)

  2. then hit Ctrl shift C and transfer all attributes to new comp, so that the animation goes along with it. Rename the pre-comp.

  3. mask the pre-comp so as to leave space in the beginning and end of the bar.

that should create what you are trying to create. there might be other ways but i’ve tried that last night and it seems to work fine.
