Marching ants artifacts?

#1

Has anyone else ever experienced this bug? Im currently using CS3 but I’m fairly sure it happened to me back when I used CS2 as well.

I get these strange dotted lines appearing in layers or masks. They look like marching ants so I wonder whether they are the result of selections I am making. Working at 4k etc they are hard to spot and I will generally discover them later down the line whilst concentrating on a specific area.

It’s usually possible to get round it by painting the mask or cloning the layer etc but I suppose I’m just curious as to whether anyone else has had this problem and what might be causing it? Even though the fixes are generally simple it would be better to not have to do them in the first place.

I’ve attached a pic of what I mean

have you called the exterminator?

but seriously, you mean the “footprints” are actual pixels on the canvas/layer?

#3

It looks like selection garbage that is strictly screen and not document based. If these things are actually getting in to your image then I’m at a loss.

Yea these artifacts are actually in the image, I suppose each step is a couple of pixels high by 1 pixel wide. They are usually a solid colour (most typically white and black) which leads me to suspect they are created when i make a selection and fill. Wierd tho eh?!! :banghead:

very weird indeed. i thought it was a video card problem
and you’re saying you had this problem in CS2 as well which makes this even more weird

couple questions:

  1. do you use a tablet when selecting/masking?
  2. have you re-installed your system since you first discovered this problem?
  3. have you tried to change the scratch disk(s)?
  4. do you have weird problems in other gfx applications?
  5. can you approximately pinpoint the moment when this happens?

Hi Creeto

In answer to your questions

1/ Yes I use a tablet for everything
2/ Yes I’ve had this problem both at work and home
3/ No I havent played around with scratch disks
4/ No this is the only one really, aside from the odd maya hang
5/ No thats the thing, they are so small that I only tend to pick up on them when Im zoomed in at 800% or whatever.

Perhaps I’ll start hiding my selections before I fill to see whether that has any effect.

#7

so you have this same problem on different machines and with different tablets?

#8

Yea I dont work there now but Im fairly certain I encountered this at the last place I worked although I didnt use a tablet there.

No matter, it’s obviously not a widespread thing, I’ll just get by with my little fixes
