Making Convex Collision Hulls / Shrink Wrapping

#1

I originally posted this under the 3DS Max forum but thought I might get a better response here.

I’m using Max 6 to create models for a game and part of the process involves creating a convex collision hull. The hull is eventually processed by qhull further down the artwork pipeline, so it isn’t 100% required that the hull is convex in Max, but obviously it would be better if it was.

My problem is that I haven’t found an easy way of generating a convex hull for a model in Max. If you’re not sure what I mean the effect is like shrink-wrapping the model. It is surrounded by a simplified mesh that contains only outward facing sides. Creating the convex shape by hand is time consuming and I’m looking for a way to speed things up. There was a good convex hull generator for Max 3/4 at http://www.worldzone.net/games/azra…T_ZERO/MAX.html under FlexPorter but I can’t get it to work with Max 6.

Does anyone know of any plugins or good techniques?

I have written a convex hull utility plugin (for 3DS Max 6) which could be downloaded from

http://www.rgdwebsite.com/rgdhull.html

The trial version allows upto 530 vertices. I hope this helps.
