making bumpmaps

#1

Hi!

I’ve seen bump map textures done in many ways, some of them are “time consuming” other just dont make that good of a bump map… There is also software that generates those, but they cost, ofcourse, and in my opinion require unnecessary tweaking.

I’ve discovered a very easy way to make good bumpmaps using PS only, without having to tweak alot. As i said, I havent seen bumps done this way somewhere else… but some of you may already know about this method.

here goes;

1. make your texture B&W (image > adjustments > desaturate)
2. go to filter > other > Highpass, just mess aruond with the radius. (higher values should produce sharper “whites”)

perfect bumpmap everytime! :smiley:

hope this is useful and not just a spam.

Sounds like a good tip, but hasn’t everyone switched from old greyscale bumpmaps to normal maps? Have you had the same success converting these maps into normal maps?

For the normalmaps I just use nvidias plugin for PS. Iam not sure though which one is better (normal vs bump), I guess that depends on what you are doing.(?) I should mention that I do know the arithmetic difference between those two…

I’ve used the trial of “crazybump” and I’ve actually purchased “shadermap pro”, both make a very good job but as I mentioned earlier … they cost. And I find going in to yet another software to generate bumps and normals is time consuming … but thats me! :smiley:

sounds good. ive never tried normal maps, but i havnt really needed it for my work; my bump maps were just to give a little “physical texture” to my image maps…
