Making a RPG game, need graphical help

#1

Heya! I’m a programmer (Visual basic, Java, Delphi) and a 3d modeller in 3dS max, but with little/almost no time to work in it… I’ve recently got into Adobe Photoshop CS, and I like it and I know to work in Flash MX…

The thing I’m trying to do now is to make this wacky RPG game that I have the idea for, but don’t know to do the graphics… :frowning: Everything I can draw is just too serious and not cartoony enough and I think I need some professional (well, just more professional than me would be good enough lol) help… If I can get any…

So, here’s the plot, and if anyone is interested in helping, I beg you to do it! Thanx!

Storyboard

An alien race (the usual, I guess :stuck_out_tongue:) is preparing an invasion on our planet, and somewhere on their way to Earth, they catch a TV signal - Animal Planet, showing an educational show about penguins… The aliens get this the wrong way around, thinking that the main and mostly evolved civilization is the one of the penguins, so they get down here, and start “meddling in their affairs” - they catch the penguin leaders (this part always cracks me up), clone them and stuff, making their own penguin dominion… Of course, the whole world knows nothing of this, but…
Somwhere, back on the ice cap…A young bear comes out of his cave, disturbed by something, only to see (making a teddy bear O.o look with one brow up in heavens lol) that the green (zombified) penguins are building a great massive construction site (controlled by the aliens, with fire all around the place and hellish stuff), when they spot him! There’s a persuit through the snowy valley and in the end, the bear escapes swearing an oath to return things to normal…

(Crazy, isn’t it?)

Well… This is far from explaining everything, but it’s enough to just give a hint of what I’m intending to make (add a couple of mutated snowmen, a couple of dangerous lost-packages-from-down-under, and other thingies that make the world go round)… If anyone would be so kind to help with this, it would earn him (or her of course) my eternal gratitude  and a great place in the game credits once it’s finished… Thanx in advanced, people  See ya around

hey, im thinking that you’ll have mroe luck osting this in the 3d WIPS. you’ll get lots of modelers looking in there to provide suggestions. im guessing many of them will be the type of low poly modler that ur after. as for me, i only do nurbs organic modeling so i wouldn’t be of much help. i love the story line though, im subscribign to this forum lol.

Thanx for the tip raythex  I’ll post it there now, and I’ve also made one sketch, but it’s sketch only and means absolutely nothing… Gonna upload that soon…

As for how this is gonna be a RPG… Well… imagine Diablo on the north pole, your teddy-bear barbarian fighting of penguins, mutated penguins and other stuff… That’s for the graphical part… And as for the storyline further on and stuff, we’ll have a look at it later lol… Don’t know any of it yet  I follow a Game master rule - never plan, be prepared

Cheers!

oh, you might wanna look into programming in c++ just becuase its so much more versitile than visual basic, java, or delphi. im sry to break it to you, but you can’t exactly program any games with visual basic (which im guessing your most familiar with) becuase its too slow, and you will have problems coding an actual engine to run your game.

delphi, is just simply no good for running real time graphics

and java, well… dont get too complex with java or else the computer wont beable to keep up with the deriving of hte code.

i dont see the relevence that flash mx will have with your game. but its useful if your… planning on making a webpage for it i guess.

all in all, games + programmed in c++ = good

games + programmed in most other languages = not very good. or, good but…not fast… or with good graphics…

cheers

Hey  thanx for all the tips, but… (Always a but in it…) You just can’t imagine how many people told me that, and they are all apsolutely wrong about many things with this -

  1. Visual basic can make games… You only need to know how to… I don’t say it’s easy, and sure - C++ is better, it’s more system-related, but you can make good games in VB… Look it up on the net, there are some examples…

I’m just starting Java, and I don’t know it’s capacities, so I can’t truly talk about it…

But 2) Flash MX… Flash has an integrated programming language that can work out games… And I’m not just talking about the little stuff… It’s quite powerful for sprite games and stuff… And as Computer 3D is a mere perspective projection of a 2D space, I don’t see why this wouldn’t be enough… Lol, this reminds me how many people thought Duke Nuke’m was actually 3D :stuck_out_tongue:

And Delphi has a game development pack named Delphix, that has all the requirements for a good game… Under good, I don’t take breath-taking, but enjoyable… Still, I never fought the fact that C++ rules… I just don’t like it, that’s all

cheers

I don’t think raythex meant VB can’t make games, maybe he just ment you can’t make complicated games since it is too slow. Flash is maybe good for a small game, it’s not fast at all. Delphi, I know very little about so no comment. If you don’t like c++ (don’t know why you wouldnt), Java would be your best bet, you just have to use it wisely so you don’t end up with a slow game. The bigger the game, the closer I would stick to c/c++/java and maybe assembly(for heavy calculations).

As for your game idea, it reminds me of Earthbound for some reason; I guess it’s because of the alien invasion and a comical plot. Good luck.

Ummm… Sorry if I sounded rough or somethin, raythex, no hard feelings sent/received

About Java and stuff - Yeah, I planned on doing so, but I don’t plan a massive game… I’m afraid I’m not that good at it, so, I’d just go step by step… Smaller games first

Thanx for the luck

Cheers!!
