Looking for Tutorials: Painting Clothes in Photoshop

#1

Hello all,

I am looking for tutorials that will help me to paint realistic clothing using Photoshop. I am particularly interested in tutorials that help me to understand the following:

  • How folds appear on various articles of clothing while worn (pants, skirts, shirts, dresses) whether loose fitting or not. In other words, the “paths” that folds and creases follow while clothing is on the body.

  • How to paint shadow and light into folds and creases in clothing.

Any help along these lines would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Wow, KotsVlok! Hopefully you didn’t injure a finger typing in your useful bit of information.

Anyway…Dan, your best bet would be do a search on the PhotoShop forum here at CGSociety and post the question there if you don’t come up with anything. Also look for PS books by Bert Monroy who is the master of all things Photoshop.

Good luck!

KotsVlok,

I am not some “newb” that is too lazy to do a search. I have looked for tutorials via Google (and a few other search engines) and most of what I turned up were garbage. Because I know there are seasoned professionals on this forum and many have links they have already stored away in their favorites, I thought I would ask.

In any case, thanks for you very “kind” contribution.

Sheesh.

@ All Others,

I am not concerned if the tutorials are free or if I need to pay for them. I am really struggling with painting decent folds in clothing for real-time 3D models and I would like to take some time working through tutorials on the subject of painting folds and learning the direction of their flow.

Again, thanks to anyone that actually helps.

It can be tricky… but I would venture that the best method would be to try and get reference of cloth folds, even if it means getting dressed up and taking a photo  Or even better, get someone to pose for you.

Apologies for my harsh reply.
Got fired today, so i’m pretty cranky about that.

Anyhow, Goodluck on your tutorial hunt! I’ll continue the job hunt, hehe.

Some useful theory: http://www.wetcanvas.com/ArtSchool/Hagan/cloth1.htm

The books Bridgeman’s Complete Guide to Drawing from Life and Hogarth’s Dynamic Wrinkles and Drapery are good for thinking about how folds form in cloth.

Although I think Hogarth draws some of the ugliest stuff ever, his instructions are quite good. Just don’t end up drawing like him.

NP. Sorry for my harsh reply to your reply  .

@all others:

Thanks for the links! It just goes to show that there is not a lot out there, I suppose.

Have you checked out the Vilppu DVD on Drapery? It seems to apply to your need as it covers the basic concepts of drapery including the seven basic folds and drawing the clothed figure.

Not PS specific, but such basic principles should be applicable.

There are at least 3 other tips at renderosity’s tutorials on this topic. Hope it helps… might need to register first to view them…
