Looking for an Article/feature on Point cloud based lighting.

Hi all,

Few months ago, i dont really remember exactly when but i saw an article, a feature done here on Cgtalk/cgsociety on point cloud based indirect diffuse lighting. it was on some tool developed in house. in which you could on the fly change and relight and the result was right there, interactive.

its NOT the PIXAR points feature and neither the BAKERY relight one.
the one i am talking about had a render of the laughing buddha OBJ model used quite often in renders.

rings a bell any one?i would be glad if i can lay my hands on it.

thanks

I think you mean this ,but I am not sure whether this is point cloud technique or not.

just to be clear, this takes a HDRI and approxmimates it with delta (point/spot) lights. There are a few other programmes that do this, and has nothing to do with point based lighting or realtime lighting.

Nick is absolutely right about it.
If I am not wrong the current mentalray and iray supports it and the only difference is it provides an visual display and I am also anxious to know how this tool works with non importance driven shaders.

that’s pretty sick.
looks a bit like spherical harmonics just with a lot of control.

#9

mental ray has supported this for a while, there is a light option on the hdri ball (dont have maya here to confirm the exact wording).

No, it’s just a dome light, albeit a very clever one.
