local / world space after importing a model

hi all–hope this is an appropriate place for this Maya question:

I am importing a simple model to animate, and am having some trouble figuring out local/world axis issues when I try to establish my aim constraints.

The problem I’m running into is that the imported elements do not seem to recognize a local coordinate system, but only the world coordinate system. The local and world are identical, and so I’m not able to establish a meaningful aim constraint.

Is there a way to reset/force the local coord’s to what they should be? Or maybe there’s something I should be doing differently on import?
