Lip Sync

#1

Was just wondering how you guys go about doing lip sync.

Do you get the actual lip syncing down first and animate the rest later, or the other way around?

I’m working on one now. The animation itself won’t have a lot going on. It’s really all about the dialogue. Since the most important part to me seems to be the talking, i thought i’d just get that done first. Then i’d do the subtle animations to match it.

It’s only my second lip sync so i’m wondering if there’s a better way to go about it.

I suppose this is largely based on opinion and preference, but just wondering what the more common method seems to be.

typically I tend to save syncing for the end. The lipsync rides on top of the performance, and so many things in a pose can impact how you animate the sync. For instance, If I animate my character speaking, then go through and animate the body. chances are they don’t compliment eachother. You may have to readjust/cheat your sync, because of a particular pose. So it typically pays to wait IMO. Don’t forget about the face while your posing the body though. I tend to block in rough facial expressions while I key/block the body performance. I like to believe it lays the framework for soon to animate lipsync.

All the Best!

btw, for animating sync, I use a similar workflow to Jason Ospia’s Stop Staring book. start with open/close, wide/narrow, and take it from there. Phonemes = yuck, IMO

Hmm, yea i hadn’t really thought of how a particular pose would dictate how the character would deliver the line, which sounds completely like a no-brainer right now…

Good thing i asked. Pretty sure you saved me a big headache

Thanks!

Yeah, I normally save lip syncing for the end like most people. Also I think the first video on this site will help you with this question. http://animationprogression.blogspot.com/search/label/Ratatouille

Also, there are tons of videos on that blog, but Ratatouille is one of my favorite Pixar movies and I thought that video would be helpful to you.

Edit: I just noticed this, when you hit play on that video it plays a bit of the video, then an ad, then the rest of the video. Sorry about that, but it’s still good.

Wow that site is awesome. Definitely cool to see behind the scenes like that.

Thanks for that link. That should help me out a bunch.
