Linux version? Still in progress?

#1

Hello everyone,
I’ve read several times on different forums that Luxology is (was?) looking into developing a Linux version. Anyone heard anything about it? As more and more are converting to linux I think it would make sense… but perhaps I’m wrong…

For us Vista is not going to be an option. And apple hardware is too expensive when the company is growing.

anyhow, rumors would be welcome  and even better if someone had some real info

regards
stefan

I’ve been looking into this lately too. I’ve gathered from the Modo forums that Lux had a Linux version in beta testing in the 1.x release cycle, but haven’t updated it or officially made it available since. They haven’t commented on it for a while so not sure what the status is now… might be worth emailing them about it though - I figure the more people that ask, the more they might consider making it available…

I did e-mail them, but all I got back was the sound of crickets

I think that Brad mentioned a while back that there simply hadn’t been the interest to warrant further development at this stage. There just weren’t the numbers to justify it. That’s what I remember…

Here’s the response I got from their support:

Thanks for your email and interest in modo. While we would like to have a
Linux version of modo we have not yet found enough interest to justify the
engineering effort. It is on our list as a possibility for the future but I
don’t have any date of possible availability.

I too have lobbied for a Linux port of modo, or at least a Linux render client. Continue to do so on the Luxology forums, as the “squeaky wheel gets the grease”. I run Ubuntu at home, as well as OSX, so I would like to see a Debian package. Right now, Maya and XSI only run on Red Hat or Suse based distros. Lux could be the first to support .deb packages. Maybe someday…
