LightWave not ease to use

#1

I’ve looking forward to learn 3D softwares other then Lightwave, wich is basicly what i know about 3D. Simply because LW isn’t the most related to games and for job applications, at least in my country.

When i was looking for info about the other softwares to know wich one to choose, many times i got into software comparison websites: ‘this is beter’ then this, that is better then that…’

Most of the times the less positive point on Lightwave is ‘not ease to use’…

I dont get it… Of course you dont make things out of LW just by opening it and random clicking some buttons (like it could be done, at some level on Photoshop), but you can work on the geometry configuration, very much hands on… ‘This point goes there, lets bevel this, merge here, cut there…’.

And from what i’ve been seeing from other 3D application the modeling and transforming tend to be more ‘caged’, since you have to aplly modules to the object (wich u can undo wich is great) but the object is in a cage, pretty much like when it goes to layout, right?

So why do many think LW is ease to use? Wich part of the process?

My intention is not starting a big discussion. Just want to understand somethings… I ask this also to understand what’s waiting me outside ‘LW home comfort’ :stuck_out_tongue:

I would like to understand what are the main conceptions concerning to 3D workflow (especially the modeling). Do you know such website where each program conception is explained and compared, without necessarely being judgemental.

By the way im tending to learn Maya, altough in Portugal the most used is 3DSMax. But if you know Maya you kick ass on 3DS right?

Maya is verry, verry, verry deep. You need verry, verry much parameters.

Max ist o.k., Cinema is not my passion.

LW ist verry easy. You can model verry intuitive. LW was the first step for me to learn 3d.

I think so every new application is hard to use and something that’s used everyday for year is easy… It’s just matter of experience of user which is using it, rarely application (at least if application has no missing features and long workarounds to bypass them).

For people that want to model faster TrueArt is making tools that boost workflow, like:

EasyMesh (what is tool doing depends on where you click, not what is selection or setting - context sensitive action)
http://easymesh.trueart.pl

EasySplit for cutting http://easysplit.trueart.pl

SwiftEdgeLoop http://www.trueart.eu/?URIType=Directory&URI=Products/Plug-Ins/SwiftEdgeLoop
and many many others…

Software is easy to use once you get used to it and know its features inside out. As a 3D app Lightwave isnt my favourite package - C4D is, so I dont choose LW lightly.

As a cost effective solution LW is the hands down winner of all the 3D apps. But the fact of the matter is that 3dsMax and Maya rule in the medium-to-large studio sector. Where money is no matter, Lightwave simply isnt as powerful as the rest. If you want a job in that area then I would recommend Maya as it has a PLE.

But at the end of the day you have to factor in price - Lightwave is the best all round full solution application. Should you need more punch - throw in Silo and Messiah. So if you need to do a few freelance gigs that arent fussy about which app you use, LW is ideal as you only have to make back £550 for it to pay for itself - which is worth putting up with the slightly uncomfortable interface.

So the price is the easiest thing about lightwave.

Compared to XSI, Wings3D, Silo, Hexagon2, Blender - I find LW easy to use and very logically laid out for how I see things.
That said, no two people are alike and each has there own idea of what is a “good” and “easy” way to work.
There are some who adore Silo, others gush and drool over XSI, more over Maya and then some over MAX.

Grab as many demos as you can, find which software works best and “easiest” for you and go with that.

For me, it was and indeed remains, Lightwave, it just does what it says on the tin for how my brain works.
