Lighting Hair Problem... Please Help

Ok so im so frustrated right now and I am sure there is just a stupid button I forgot to press. I have been messing with shave and haircut in maya 2011 and got the hair exactly where I want it… i was doing some rendering / lighting tests to see what would come out. Without lighting the image came out like so…

and then i rendered it with a couple different render settings and got the same problem over and over again…

the damn thing keeps rendering flat white! i dont know what to do… if anyone has encountered this please let me know…

Looks like you’re rendering out the hair’s alpha/matte channel. Have you checked the render output settings? I use Max so I can’t say where you might find them.

Well i have been playing with different display properties on the hair object and nothing seems to work so far… I havent seen anything about an alpha output for the hair. the weird part is the hair renders fine without any lights in the scene (using default lighting) but as soon as a light is added, it freaks out and just gives me the alpha for the hair… so maybe its a problem with the lights?..

Anyone else have any ideas? :-/ this character is pretty important…

ok so ive read a lot about the need to set the mental ray settings to hair primitives. I have found an area that has a drop down menu called (Hair Export)… this is the attribute I believe everybody is talking about? Ive tried this and nothing… :-/
