Lighting Challenge #23: Mad Science (WIP)

#81

freeko: Nice start, keep going.

ChrisFast: Good start! For the brightness of the light sources, they’re not emitting much diffuse light try to increase some of the bounce light. As an example. I’d expect a lot of green bouncing off of the table onto the books that are under the goggles.

BinkyHunter. Nice work. If you’re going to be using that many lights it may be a good idea to disable specularity on some of them. The glass on the right has 5 highlights which is a little confusing. Try to keep the highlights down to 1 or 2 at most 3. With the table top being so blue, I expect a lot of blue light to be bouncing up from it. That should brighten up the inside of the bookcase.

igorvfx: Good job. I’m a little confused with the current lighting setup. It looks like a window on the right but there’s a bright cone of light coming into the room, I’m not sure how to interpret that. The glass looks like it’s lacking refraction, it’s usually a value between 1.440 - 1.900.

TaKIKO: Great work so far. Simple but effective. I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of the materials updated. One critique I would have is that the books under the shelf are a little too dark and difficult to see.

amitlighting: Good work. Right now the lamp is almost in the middle of the image as well as pointing straight down. I think the image would benefit if the lamp was moved more to the right of the image. That way the lamp would be out of the middle of the image and at the same time the lamp would have to be angled.

MadMax3d: Nice job! Wow, there’s a lot going on here. It’s a little difficult discerning one object from another in the chaos but that may be intentional.

olas72: Nice work with the electricity, i’d like to see lots of cool blue’s and purple light being emitted from it.

here is what I have done in the past 2 days. A little high on render time. I would like to try to cut that back a little. I am rendering with metal ray but no FG or GI. using mostly mia_material_X. I didn’t really want to dive into texturing to much just in case a big job comes in at work then I might not be able to get this done. But I do think it needs it. comping in fusion.
would love to c&c
all the best

thanks kanooshka, only two lights have specularity turned on so i think it may have to do with the material i have for the glass, like the highlights are being shown from the outside of the glass as well as the inside. i’ll go through and double check the rest of the lights though. As far as the light bouncing into the bookcase i actually noticed that myself the minute i posted the WIP last night so its already been fixed.

Thanks guys

Thanks kanooshka!!
About the light, it’s coming from the windows only a moon light. I have to check the config of exposure of the camera to correct the softlight in the left side.
In the glass i’m not change shaders in my scene, i’m working in basic lights first. My second step is work in shaders of oobjects.

Making changes on lights…Looking for the feeling I want to get.

TaKIKO, I love your mood…It´s remembering a work I love. Nice one!

Lot of possibilities here…everyone differents each others.

Yet another one. I’ve been having real problems getting the fill light to look right but I think I might have cracked it now. I ended up using a skylight with a pretty low multiplier and a free light off to the right, also pretty dim. The backwall texture was originally from CGTextures I thing but it’s been tweaked a bit in photoshop. Still got lots to do though

I see a story in this scene and want to go a little beyond a still life. Looking for “mad science” inspiration. Here’s the most interesting so far. (NOTE: it takes a minute to load. If you click the big arrowhead button near the bottom of the page, and then go back from the next scene, it moves.)

#88

All the images are looking good, here is my WIP. Any comments are welcome, thanks.

#89

kanooshka sir…thanks…

#90

Today I was free again so I worked on it some more. Mainly the back wall, still need alot of fixes. Next is to work on the materials for the books, papers, what ever else I put in.

@Kanooshka:Thnks a lot sir…
dis s my recent update, wnt to portray a scientists table who has spent almost of his life workng on it…wnt to portray the long lonely hours he had spent workng…but really confused as how to bring dat type of mood :banghead: …PLS GIVE UR VALUABLE IDEAS…

#92

Rearranged a bunch of objects to play to the camera more, did a lighting pass, added textures to the table and the wall. I want to dirty up them both up.

#93

Still looking at images to work things out. I found a Frankenstein comic with an intense lab. The old Frankenstein movie. Finally, this is a methamphetamine lab which is more realism than I’m going to go for, I think. Now I’m going to get into the scene.

Hi everyone,
Hope you are all having fun with this mad science. Here is mine, I am new in this site, I want to show you my progress, I started today. So basically, I want to show the mood I have, is kind of night and getting some green tone to the scene , I am working on getting better shaders for the liquids because as you can see is hard to notice, I think that’s because of the final gather. I am open to any critiques, so pelase feel free to let me know how I can improve, I will really appreciate it!.

@takiko:Very Nice Update,

#97

I have had a fun Friday night, I solved a few of my issues. The test tube liquid does not like the Dielectric Material shader and would render out black. However the two large beakers render it fine.

The bump on the wall is mainly to test the Refraction and such, I plan on replacing it.

However I have one issue I can’t solve. In order to get that strong reflection on the tall beaker I had to make my MR_Area Light “Visible”, and no matter what “Primary Visibility” box I uncheck it shows up in the renders still. Can anyone help me out on hiding that light?

I wish I had more done to get some better critiques, but this isn’t the last post from me in this thread.

#98

Hi all…adjusted the shaders a bit…nd added som fill…

#99

Hmmmmmmmmm. a tough one…

Fought with scene through out the day. Please help me. I will try to work on the shader and texture. Phew! those shaders were really tough as shader is really my weak point. This shaders were tougher than King’s treasure.
