@Dan: I don’t have GI on, but I do have FG. And all my shadow casting lights have ray traced shadows turned on.

#103

2nd draft lighting

#104

Thanks, for the explanation. Could you post a render without Final Gather?

#105

@Dan: Here is a render without FG on.

#109

Well her’s my latest update…as I was busy wid other stuffs…so didn’t do much with the scene…

#110

Hi all, This is my first time doing one of these challenges. This is what I have so far, any comments welcome.

#111

Here’s another update:

I am really kiking tuffmutt’s and fredduck’s versions…

fredduck’s is really looking great! Can’t wait to see it with bulbs lit and balloons…
Great camera/scene and lighting choices that seems to match the dynamic background cloud lighting very well…

Evo3D: Welcome! Nice start. The scene seems to have strong ambient light compared to the high contrast background. Some warm light coming from the background would help bring the image together.

pankajkaintura43: Getting better! There still seems to be light leaking somewhere, the sphere on the top is getting warm light from somewhere. Try looking at photographs of color lights and look at how the colors behave. Most of the time the light source itself is not very saturated.

brookselliott: I really like where this image is heading. With the sun being right behind everything and being so strong, I’d expect lots of specular highlights and very bright direct illumination. Try looking at photographs of backlit day scenes, they’re usually very high contrast.

Ashrafabdelaziz: Welcome! You have a very nice start so far. Having such strong DOF from a distance makes this image feel like a miniature. You may also want to rotate your key light some so that there’s more of a gradient along the carousel.

Voigg: Thanks for posting the image. I’m trying to figure out why could be causing the issues. If you’re using raytraced shadows, the shadows seem very soft. Are you using a light radius? Or area lights? If you’re using light radius it’s possible the radius is so big it’s penetrating through objects.

ninepan: Good job, make sure your lights are casting shadows.

Assadshk21: Good work, For a horror image you may want to work a little bit with contrast, if the cool light screen right is toned down it could make the shot a little more menacing. Another thing that helps make images a little more frightening is make the light come more from the ground up.

fredduck: Great! The bounce light helps out a lot. However, the balloons are still very dark. Balloons usually reflect a lot of light because of their material and transparency. The bounce light on the bottoms of the horses also looks a little bit too bright

Well thanx a lot for ur feedback Kanooshka but I guess the light coming on to the sphere is not light leaking…that light is coming from the spotlight which I have put behind the carousel
to give some warm rim light to the roof…but as u said its not looking good then let me try to give a different angle to that spot light…

This is my first Lighting Challenge, and I’m pretty excited for it. I haven’t gone too crazy with the shaders and texturing yet. I just wanted to get the base lighting and composition down first.

I guess this scene could be interpreted as either “Child’s Fantasy” or “Tale of Horror.” Definitely Child’s Fantasy for me though…

Any C & C would be welcomed.

…only worked on Merry go round n Hammer game(as i dnt no wt thy r called)…jst added lights n texture(no glows)…in this i wl go fr theme bright night…wll post wrk on rest of d scene

Thanks to all for your comments and advises. I do really appreciate you take the time for feedback. This is essentially the reason why I joined CGSociety. Improving.

brookselliott: I prefer the “colder” image. I know it’s about lighting but I think that if you move your cam more on the right and so having a good part of the image void, the clown with the balloon will be really abandonned. Anyway nice work.

PatDunal: I’ll go for the “Child’s Fantasy” too and as a big kid I whish I could see more of this underwater dome.

Jadrock: Had a hard time too finding the name of the game for real pictures reference. The name of this carnival game is Hi Striker.

Voigg: your balloon texture is awesome.

Fredduck -

Nice scene!

Look at the clouds in your background image: they are getting a nice golden bounce light coming from the lower left. Add that warm bounce to your 3D objects too! Try to get nice shaping (nice gradients instead of flat continuous areas) running around different sides of each seat in the ferris wheel, the canopy above the merry go round, etc. You might need more than one bounce light, or a kick of sky fill coming from the right as well as the left just to help shape all the round forms.

You have some objects in your scene that should be translucent (the tent, the balloons, etc.) In a back-lit scene where the sky and sun are bright behind your objects, the translucent materials would let a lot of light through and would look different from an opaque metal object.

Hi,
I’m on it… Now, I hope finish before the deadline. Last challenge I finish my image just in 2010!
I’ll use Blender + Yaf(a)Ray.

See ya!

Hi Jeremy,

Thank you for the feedback.

4th draft. Tried to match the background tint as much I could using colored lights.
Add two lights center and right including the wheel and the top of the merry go round. Then I had to corect the inside of the merry.
Add one more light between the wheel and the carroussel to get the gradient on the roof top.

As for the balloons: I’m quite satisfied with the bunch of yellow one, should I? Advice from a balloon expert needed here!
The red one is not OK. I can’t get rid of that specular on the back. No lights there. Use a standard material with opacity fallof.

Can’t wait to have more “illumination” from the members. I’m having fun!
