Lighting Challenge #22: The Carnival (WIP)

#281

Hey Lighters, I was toying around with a daylight version of this scene and was getting nowhere so I went an opposite route and tried to make a “Nightmare” version. I wasn’t going for “Scary” so much as just “Eerie.” Let me know what you think of it so far.

#282

hello everyone!!

Well, this is my first try on this one, and th first challenge in wich i participate... so please "destroy it" :)
I really want to improve this, but i'm having some trouble about decide what to do next. Very appreciated if you could give me some ideas, and ofc, help me by telling me the points you think that are not-so-good.

About the lighting setup, i’m using:
Key Light -> Directional Light simulating the sun
Fill Light - > Spot Light with very weak intensity just to make the shadowed area more bright
And i’m using another spot light with blue color, positioned behind the caroucel, just to simulate the light emitted by the sky.

The full-resolution version can be found in the following link:

Kind regards,
Leonardo

Hi guys i think this one is good but what i have to do more just suggest me.:bounce:

#284

hey ranjan3dlighting… i like it . my few suggestions would be the over bright lights on the background buildings. if u have so many light on the carousal and the Ferris wheel, the building lights should be a lot dimmer.especially the red tower on the left. also the shadows of the bench on to the grass seem to float a bit. it could be a shadow map issue . the metal barriers don’t have any shadows .also if the metal barriers receive so much light from the cam angle then maybe the benches could also soak a bit on the front side. the carousal top cone seems to get the lighting from a different source. maybe u could improve the tiling on the sidewalk bricks. they look stretched.
and this is not a lighting issue but please correct the spelling on “please” use me.
thanks…look’s good.

@ranjan3dlighting: Good job so far. I have to concur with tuffmutt1. Your image looks kinda flat because everything now is the same brightness. What is interesting as well is your background buildings being more saturated then your foreground objects. This should be vice versa. The glow on the Giant Wheel looks off as well. It shouldn’t nearly be spread out that much.

@dzazaleo: Nice input. Love the texturing and colors. I have to admit im not so keen on your sky. As part of the lighting, you might want to add areas with stronger highlights. Maybe some small parts of the metal would glimmer in the sun. Would make it more interesting to look at.

VinVang69: Scary picture there, heh  A stylish approach - works for me. Maybe you could try a more dynamic camera angle? A little bit of camera roll and maybe a low level shot to build up the tension. The close up works fine. It manages to capture the anxious claustrophobic feeling.

Quick post, im very busy.

Camera Composition is final.

Sillouette Composition Pass.
B&W Key Contrast Pass. (Many elements not lit yet).
Basic Key Contrast with Ambient.

Hello All,

I’m not too late am I? Just came across the challenge today… I’ve been watching other lighting challenges wanting to participate for a long time now. So here I am - tear me up

So far I have UV’d the entire scene and decided to do a little testing (BSing around) before I get into the textures and serious lighting. I used Maya, Mental Ray, and Photoshop to produce the Concept image below.

#288

Hey Guys ! Here is my new render. I have rendered this scene in Maya software and used PS for post comp. plzzz leave ur thoughts !

High resolution

With some color changes -

High resolution

Hi guys,
nice works.

There’s my second render. I do not know how it goes at the end. I’m only testing the lighting, textures and also the framework of the camera.
I only used Max+V-Ray

#290

@pmcb: nice. i like the eerie atmosphere. How did you go about creating the fog? did you map a noise map to a plane or did you do it in post?

#291

thank you Xeltestic.

I just create a BoxGuizmo (Create - Helpers - (RollOut) Atmosferic Apparatus - BoxGizmo).
Then on Modify panel you can Add - volume fog and click Setup
Then only you have to do is testing some values. I hope the explanation has been helpfull.
I could make some pictures of the sequence but I still feel a little mixed up with this.

Sorry my english

#292

Its ok, don’t bother. I know it

Here is a link to a music video depicting a carnival. Might give some inspiration. The band is from Finland btw. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRVrQsdWDds

Here’s my first addition. Nothing fancy yet. Just threw in a couple of standard lights - 2 omnis and a couple of spot lights to get an over all feel on where I might take this. Still missing some textures as well. My question concerns the drop shadow on the ground. Is it readable?

#293

This is my second post within a day… Please give me feedback before I get too far past this point. Thanks!

Maya, Mental Ray, and Photoshop… render time 9.5 minutes. No textures added yet except for the top of the Carousel…

@radbadchad: Interesting color palette. Eni Oken would call that a 4-way split if I’m correct. In other words I see you using 2 pairs of complimentary colors. It seems to work surprisingly well imo. It has a nice feel to it. The light that shines on your horses is a little overly bright. You might want to tune that down a little, not too much. Rather have the horses be less reflective and absorb more of the light. Im not so sure what is going on with the Giant Wheels bottom part. What is that greyness crawling up? Anyways keep it up. Your going in a good direction.

radbadchad: Nice start. With the moon being right behind the scene like that I’d expect to see a lot more light being cast by it, perhaps even making it the key light source. There are a few areas which are overbright, in particular the carousel and under the Ferris Wheel. Try to add falloff to your lights and/or decrease their intensity.

xeltestic: Good work. I can’t figure out exactly what the shadow is on the ground. It may be the perspective that’s making it difficult to read. The spot light on the balloon is very similar in color to the diffuse light on the carousel. It may help to separate different areas of the scene with different light colors to show more depth.

pmcb: Nice image. The foreground materials have a nice quality to them and the atmosphere is off to a good start. Overall I think the image could use some more contrast. The pillars in the foreground have nice shading, each side has a different brightness. If the you could get some more shaping of the Carousel with light it would look a little less flat.

preetamsaha: I like this new render a lot. You’ve matched a lot of the light sources well with the backplate in particular the lights on the Carousel’s top. I’d like to see some more specular highlights on the balloons, they should be nearly as bright as the light sources themselves. Specular reflections are one of the main things that tell us what material an object is made out of. I’d like to see some more work with highlights on the other objects in the scene as well.

PPGINGRAS: Interesting take so far. It’s hard to tell where the lights motivation is coming from. Keep going!

ranjan3dlighting: Good work. The light sources in your image match the backplate pretty well but they don’t seem to be casting much light. The tent in the back is lit very evenly, try to get some more shaping on the object.

dzazaleo: Welcome! Very nice image so far. The balloons and metal could use some stronger specular highlights, especially since they’re reflecting the sun. You may want to change the backplate, it seems to be a little too low resolution for the image. You may also want to mix up your materials a little bit, objects are getting lost when they’re next to each other. Notice how well the contrast of the wood on the floor of the carousel works in contrast to the ceiling.

VinVang69: Interesting take. I like the idea of the red eyes on the horses. I’d like to see some light being emitted from the eyes. It’s hard to see what direction the light is coming from. Try to create some nice shaping of the objects.

avnishjha: Nice start. There seems to be a lot of ambient light, especially for a night scene. Try to keep all your lights motivated.

lilnamz: Good update. Since the carousel has visible light sources I would expect the brightest part of the horses to be on the tops of them. Keep in mind that bounce light is only as bright as the illumination of the surface the light is bouncing off of.

#296

Here is my latest render, I think it is pretty close to being my final. I fixed a lot of the problems I was having and what to know what everyone thinks.

watch out my updated demoreel.

#298

Voigg, that’s beautiful. Maybe it’s just me but your ballons look as though they are filled with water. And maybe the rails could have a little golden glint from the carousel. But apart from that I’ve can’t think of anything else to say. Really beautiful.
