Lighting Challenge #22: The Carnival (WIP)

#261

lilnamz: going ahead nicely:) The ground atm is consistently lit and honestly quite boring. Maybe you wanna crop part of it off and/or have some shadows hit it from off screen objects to break it up a little.

For every one that is making night scenes. I found this really nice link. Maybe you get inspired.

Thanks to everyone who’s posting feedback. It’s great seeing people getting so involved!

lilnamz: Good work. Compared to your background image the ferris Wheel looks tiny. You may want to play with the focal length of your camera and/or scale and move things around a little. Having your lights very bright and blown out is ok because it matches your backplate but try to confine those bright spots so there’s bright areas next to dark areas similar to the way the wnndows are on the buildings. Right now the Ferris wheel is nearly pure white, I’d like to see some darker values on it as well.

pmcb: Nice Start. Keep going with this.

djprasun: Good job! The trace depth fixes a lot of issues. I’m guessing that the light in the boat’s window is coming from inside the boat but since it’s nearly the same color as the Ferris Wheel it’s hard to know exactly. You may want to play with the color of the light coming from the inside to show that it’s coming from inside the boat.

xeltestic: Nice color study. I’m interested to see how you execute it!

VFX360: The balloons you rendered definately have a good quality to them but thhe specular reflection is too small to be reflecting the sun. The highlight size reflects the size and position of a light source. I’d also expect the balloons to be reflection of the sky o be brighter than the reflections of the balloons.

brookselliott: Very nice. You may want to work with the brightness of the light bulbs themselves. On such a sunny bright day, the bulbs would be much more dim in comparison to how bright the sun is. The balloons could use some specular highlights, they look very solid and rough.

zbugja: Nice atmosphere! I really don’t have much to say to this. My only comment would be is that the thick rectangular lens effect doesn’t look quite right.

punytjoshi: Looking very nice. I like the play with different colors. I’d really like to see the specular highlights increased especially on the balloons.

Kanooshka - Thx. I wasn’t so sure about the composition so I did another one.
My idea is following: The time of hour is quite late at night. Most of the rides have/are about to close. A little girl is sitting on a bench. She got lost from her parents while visiting the carnival. The little girl is lonely and scared. She’s crying. I want to create this kind of juxtaposition. A carnival would be related to as a happy place full of people. Now it’s empty and sad and cold. I was thinking of this other character seeing the girl sitting there and about to give her a balloon. Like a glimpse of hope in this otherwise sad peace. Not made up mind though. Let’s see where it goes

Thank you, xeltestic, kanooshka and tuffmutt1. Glad you like my scene.
tuffmutt1- I dont think I can change the brightness because I have just used an image and it was bright there, in the image. I will surely add fog to my scene and see how it looks…
xeltestic- Very beautiful picture there in that link, thank you.
kanooshka- Thank you for your suggestion.

#268

here is my night scene. i will try to make more good. so please give your advice.

#269

here’s my first try… just a quick one… ~1hr shading and lighting plus a little post processing in PS… hope you like it.

#270

to begin with i like it a lot. refreshing color scheme .love the textures on the floor. the over all look and feel is quite nice.
the horse shader is a lot less reflective. they are usually some glossy painted color. also smooth so maybe that bump is not necessary. and if the poles could have a better chrome/gold like feel than it would be awesome.
also it seems its way too foggy for even the closest step of the carousal is fogged out.
great star by the way. i hope you light the ferris wheel and add some more magic to this render.

#271

also it would help every one what app/rendering system/ lighting system is posted along the images…
it helps to find and pick things out for crit or self education…
thanks…

eldonaldo: Adding to uday’s words your depth of field doesn’t look right I can say what you have done is just taken a bg an applied Gaussian blur but the blur has to be gradual if it’s just an image also in compositing you can give a ramp in alpha channel so that blur will be gradual atleast from bottom to top.

djprasun : Hey why cant you do it man of course you can, you might have used an image but it’s just a small photoshop thing do it, it will enhance your composition, and as jeremy had marked (the footstep that was looking bright in reflection but dark actually ), in your next version you just darkened it may be you removed the light completely so it is too dark ,dont remove the light if you have used fg try increasing max trace depth both in fg and raytrace settings I hope it will help

ranjan3dlighting Good start there is a strong glow in your ride(the one with horses) but such strong glow is not showling anywhere in the image. your wood benches and some other areas are goin too dark. work on that AAND what is your source of light because it has liimited fall off and it’s not matching with the red glow if that is the source get it reddish hue.

#273

thanks guys for your suggest. I am improving quality of scene.

kanooshka :Thank u so much for ur comments. I have scaled the giant wheel and reduced it light intensity as well… plz give me ur comments on this new render…

well, .I’ve maintained direct lighting and Maya software for rendering.
plz feel free to comment.

@SharinSri: your picture didn’t load up in the final image thread. You might wanna have a look.
Maybe you want to work on it a little more? I see some of the models are missing textures now.

@avnishjha: good start. Now lets see some bounce light and some shadows  btw. you might wanna break up that grass texture somewhat so it’s not that continues.

@lilnamz: good progress. I would expect some DOF with such a short focal lenght. Are you using ambient light? Your drop shadow looks almost transparent. Shadows should darken as well when getting closer to the edge. You might wanna have a look into Ambient Occlusion. I would still take the POV a little back. What would be cool to see are the shadows from those metal barriers on the ground. If you lie them up correctly they would be a great compositional element to draw us into the frame. You might as well need a higher resolution for your grass texture as it is so close to the camera atm.

keep it up every1!
