hi here is my first attempt
Lighting Challenge #19: The King's Treasure
Good day to everyone. Let me produce my work for your fair justice. Maybe somebody will find it resembling to some other renders, but it rather explaines with focusing on main detailed area in this scene, then plagiarism.
Scene was visualized with Mental Ray, no GI were used. Ive just wanted to create a feeling of a medieval room, where some robbers come to divide their stolen treasures. By the way, I couldnt keep a smile in when saw crown of a russian type :).
For the light streaks Ive used glare output shader, that my favourite 3ds max 9 happily support. Ive textured those objects that needed extra details like coins and plates. Walls looked empty for me, so Ive added armor near the window.
So, as you may see, there is nothing special.

Re-rendered and color corrected again, thought it needed warming up and I’m satisfied with this

genevieve , your work is smooth, i like it, especially the colour palette. also crisp image, maybe i’d go for some bump on the table cloth. overall it’s a very well done image! keep it up
Hey everyone !
There are awesome renders here, congrats to all of u.
Because i had a huge amount of work, I couldn’t work on the challenge yet, even though i said that i would participate in this challenge
( hope i’ll make it next time)
Good job to all of u

hello
can you please load the scene for the maya 2008 users ?
or load it as *.ma
the obj file has an error :hmm:
thanks
@Kidi: I think you can simply use the mayafileconverter.

The geometries and the object-groups should work well!
sivaavatar2009 - It’s always a good tip not to make light sources lit scene from behind the camera. This makes image look flat by removing all the shadows.
Sorry I haven’t been able to reply in this thread for the past week. I’ve been busy at work, and when I come home I’m teaching a CG Workshop where giving feedback to the students is my top priority… anyway, I’ll try to catch-up, starting with some feedback for posts on this page:
lighthunder - Good start. Work on getting contrast and dark shadows in the foreground, and put a a little light from the window on onto the chair and background.
ResidenceEvil - Interesting theory. I’ve never followed that advice though…
sivaavatar2009 - Good start. Try to get more contrast in your lighting, making it darker in the corners of the room and in the shadows, with most of the light in the scene all coming from a single direction.
KIDI - If you’re using Maya 2008 to open a Maya 2009 file, be sure to go to the File Open options box, and in the box check “ignore versions” before you open the file.
GecT - Nice image. The ring is the most interesting part. If you want to focus on that ring, then move the camera much closer to the ring so it fills more of the frame. Otherwise you might try bringing more of the scene into focus. I think the crown could use a more saturated color, something to set it apart from the tablecloth.
laika-li - Good start. I like the contrast! Some of the trays and coins look flat white in reflections, more of a gradient would be better than such big white areas. The background could use a little bounce light, or blue light from the window, selectively lighting some of the walls. If you’re creating the impression of back-lit models, adding some lim lights could really help. You could do more with the glass in the bottle on the left side, maybe a rim or two on that would help.
ResidenceEvil - Nice sccene! I like the textures on the cloth. Most of the lighting seems very flat and uniform, it’s best to choose one direction that will have the brightest light, then make the other side darker. The shadows could be softer, especially on the bag.
Tayyub - Welcome! Good start! You have a base of some fill light, now add a main light from whatever direction you choose, making one side of everything brighter and casting dark soft shadows. You could even make the light come from that lamp if you want.
ahmed90 - Welcome! I love the bold, rich colors. I wish the shadows got darker, and that the material on the sword was lighter, so that more of the contrast came from the lighting itself.

hello Mr. Burns, im a huge fan of u right after i’v seen your post at the haunted hallway challenge. I’v became a true fan of u after watching Presto. Anyways this is my post, i’v changed the changed the texture of the wall and the jewels. Can any one tell me what will be the right kind of shader for the gold and the gemstones?
Still plugging away. I think I like this compostion the best, so maybe now I’ll be able to nail down a lighting scheme.

c&c welcome

I link the portal light to my mia_physical_sky and connected a Mib Blackbody to the colour slot of both Portal Lights but it still don’t work properly . do i need a fake window or is it auto decect the objects?
I’m still new to portal lights i believe i have it setup correctly but i have yet to get light to shine threw properly and suggestions here are 2 ss of my settings … if no help i guess i will have to use old school forms of lighting that im more used to buy yield less results
