Light mapping GI

Does anyone know where I can find further information about the “light mapping” GI algorithm used by VRay (see http://www.vrayrender.com/stuff/lightmap/)? A quick google search reveals only references to how to use VRay or game programming articles on how to use baked light (light maps), a non-GI method.

Is VRay’s “light mapping” just a fancy new name for an algorithm posted under a different name? Could it be rather some kind of quasi monte carlo with irradiance caching and interpolation (like for example Yafray’s “path light”)?
