Licensed character in Expose?

#1

Hi there. A few days ago in a CGS Newsletter i saw the announce that the call for entries for the EXPOSE 7 was coming to an end. I`ve always wanted to make something of a high enough quality to deserve being in a ballistic publication.

Anyways, when i saw that info,i got kinda excited cause casually,i being modelling a character since a few weeks ago,and im really trying hard to get a really good image. The thing is,its a fan art, based on a licensed concept (Megaman).

So my question is, assuming that the image has enough quality to deserve being in the book (and that i`ll finish the thing in time), does the fact that is an image of a character based on a concept i dont own will prevent it from being in the publication? Even if i explicitly say its a fan art made for my own personal portfolio and with no comercial intents?

I have a couple of Expose books, and although i haven had the time to look them up thoroughly, i dont remember seeing any licensed characters there.

So… any help would be greatly appreciated.

Don’t quote me on this, but I doubt that it would be allowed into the book. However nothing is stopping you from submitting it just in case. Make sure to include in the description the fact that its not an original character.

Yea, i contacted ballistic. They told me pretty much what i thought they´d did, that i would have to look for the copyright holder of the concept for the character and ask for permission, and from their experience that normally takes a good amount of time,so i wont make it to the call for Expose 7.

So maybe when i finish the image, i will look into send it to another ballistic publication, although i imagine that finding the person or company owner of the copyright of a moderately famous character would be an inmensely difficult task, let alone have they respond the message of an average joe.

So… i´ll look into making original stuff in the future :wise:

Thanks for your help

Yeah, that sounds pretty standard Daniel. Capcom is pretty casual about their IP being used but only in non-commercial applications. I know another guy who tried to get their permission to publish something he had created and it was a big No Go.

Interesting… thanks for the heads up Wyatt.

Yea, i guess it makes sense that companies get a little touchy regarding their brand characters… Anyways,as i said, when i finish the image i´ll see what i can do with it… if anything  Either way i´ve learned a lot doing it.

Good luck! I hope you get for next time! I entered for expose 7 the first time this week. I have little faith that I’ll get in, there are so many amazing artists out there… But what the heck, we have to try our bests anywase! Good luck with everything!

Well, good luck to you too fiona,i hope you make it!

Yea… its a little bit daunting to send your work to a publication that year after year showcases the best of the best, the work of artists that are masters at their craft.

The funny thing is… i guess there´s irony in the fact that imo normally, the people who wants more passionately to be showcased in one of those publications, are the people with beginners/intermediate or moderately advanced abilities, cause they (and i include myself there) want to be recognized for their work and effort… but i can imagine that, most of the work that actually makes it, its from people who doesn´t care so much, cause they have had so many years in the industry and are such professionals at what they do, that dont have that need (or at least to the degree we do) to be recognized and to showcase their work.

That its just an impression thought… i could be wrong about some people.

Anyways… i guess that if we keep practising and dont give up,we may end up finding what we´re looking for.

Is that so? Interesting… maybe he was involved in the making of the game or something? Or he was just lucky to have been given permission… I will look into that;as i said,i have some exotique and expose books that havent had time to look thoroughly.
