when ive got levels up, i hold down alt and use the slider in the levels window to search for highlights. but my photo wont become active when i click on it to zoom in to place an eye dropper point. how can i make my photo active so as i can resise, zoom etc. when the levels and curves tab windows are open?

The Ctrl + and Ctrl - shortcuts will zoom in and out. Hold Spacebar and drag to pan the image.

i dont beleive it can be done. Levels is something that effects the whole image so zooming in would not be benificial. I understand your question but do not understand a reason why it would be nessesary to zoom in like that to change leves or curves.
