Laptop recommendations for CG work

#1

Hi all,

I’m sure this has been asked a thousand times, but I couldn’t find recent info and recommendations on the best laptops for CG work. I use 3ds max, maya, and zbrush. etc…

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I’m wondering if there isn’t a site like passmark.com except specifically skewed towards CG.

Thanks in advance guys!

find best possible gaming laptop. that is what you need.
but also be prepared to look at twice or more the price of same or better desktop PC performance wise.
good i7 CPU, gtx 1070 or 1080 depending on your budget. biggest possible monitor ofc but that is now range of 17", 32 GB ram. the rest more or less…

Gaming laptops could be worth considering in the desktop replacement category. The displays are often the weak link though, some might not have the best color accuracy for graphic design. As well as battery life of course. Here are some options:

Razer Blade Pro was unveiled a few days ago, it should hit the shelves later this year. All the goodies (i7-6700HQ CPU/GTX 1080/32GB RAM/17.3" 4K display covering 100% of AdobeRGB, a mechanical keyboard etc.) but costs a fortune.

EON15-X is another gaming laptop. Lots of options, up to i7-6700K/1070 GTX/64GB RAM. The 15.6" TN panel has poor viewing angles according to reviews. There’s also a 17" version, EON 17-SLX.

Asus ROG Strix GL502. i7-6700HQ/GTX 1070/only 16 GB RAM. Asus also has the 17.3" ROG-G752VS, which weighs about 9.5 lbs.

MSI GS60 Ghost Pro. i7-6700HQ/GTX 970M/only 16 GB RAM

Alienware 17. i7-6700 HQ/GTX 970M/32 GB RAM.

what’s the budget?

BTW, HP also make real good 3D laptops for their ZBook range.

While they may be pricey as hell, these machines are Grade A equipment and made to last. Try searching for a refurbished ZBook, these are usually of good quality and cost only a fraction of the original price.

When you buy a gaming labeled laptop, you’re usually paying a premium for the label. Also, for most CG work that extra gaming hardware will go to waste while making CG stuff.

If this isn’t your dedicated gaming machine, I recommend a cheaper and lighter laptop. I see the Dell XPS 15 or Precision 5110 bandied as good laptops along these lines.

Edited list

Thanks for the replies guys.

Through your recommendations and some searching on my own, I’ve found that there are in fact a few high end laptops that seem to be capable.

MSI makes a few laptops with Mobile versions of the Nvidia Quadro cards. Those look pretty promising, but from what I can tell the GPU specs ( cuda cores etc… ) are close enough to the GTX 1080 that it’s worth going with a gaming rig that has one in it like the Razer Blade pro or the MSI gaming laptops

I haven found any info comparing the mobile Quadros to the GTX1080s but I will look for it.

if you’re curious, These are all the highest end laptops I could find as of today:

Sager NP9873-S Notebook ( i7 / gtx 1080 )
Razer Blade Pro
MSI WT72 ( Xeon / Quadro )
MSI GT83VR ( 2 SLI gtx1080s / 18.3" Screen)
MSI GT73VR ( gtx1080 )

All these laptops go for around $4 K, they all have desktop specs.

Next I will look into lower priced alternatives, but frankly, I’m so tired of my current laptop being nearly unusable, that I’m prepared to spend $4K if it means I can work on the go.

Thanks for you help guys

By the way, how mobile do you need to be.

As someone who has used a big laptop before for 3D work, it kind of doesn’t work.

In either case you’ll want to plug into a wall. But the real culprit is carrying it around. Most of the laptops you’re looking at are basically desktop replacements, which is fine if that’s what you’re looking for.
