Landscape Critique

#1

Hi everyone, I started this concept a few days ago and want to move it to the next level in terms of polish. I need feedback on what is strong, needs work, etc.

Thanks!

I would suggest you paint from good photo references of landscapes and push as far as you can in terms of polish, as a form of technical training/exercise. If you do that a couple of times, you’ll automatically grasp the level of detail/polish a landscape needs in order to look credible and interesting. After that, it’s matter of deconstructing the level of detail so you can rebuilt it in any given piece you’re working on. You also need to study the characteristic of different surface material, how they react to light, and strengthen your critical foundations of visual art in general, such as the behavior of light and color, the effects of radiosity/color bleed, composition, color theory, perspective, and so on.

If you haven’t, I highly recommend you read the sticky threads in the Art Techniques & Theories forum–they are extremely helpful (linked below in my signature).

Thanks a lot! I shall do that. I also want to get in some regular old painting outside, but the great NW in spring is usually awash in rain.
