Kicking up dirt methods?

Hello!

I have a scene where a character is walking across dirt and I am trying to add dirt flying up with every step using combustion. I have run into a few problems when trying this:

After 4 steps the dust starts degenerating. The dust appears blocky after the first few particle instances. It also starts turning black as opposed to its original brown color.

I am using a different emitter for every step. This behavior is in both the view and the renders.

Anyone have any suggestions or solutions?
