Rough Concept
I’m happy to hear feedback on perspective and composition.
Hi Melaina,
I like the perspective right side and atmosphere … and it bothers me a little left structure … but it’s just a concept!
We hope to see progress
Regards
thanks for the comments guys!
Drewsen - are you viewing on a mobile device? the image seems to work fine on a browser, but it didn’t display on my phone…
Are you going to keep the sun on the inn? I think it might be a good atmosphere by playing against daylight with the right side buildings. With a low sun through the mist.
This kind of atmosphere with strong shadows.

There are some good references in the city of La Rochelle (France).
Dear Melaina,
Welcome to the CGSDMPMC.
This is a really good start and what VFX concepts usually look like. There are a few perspective issues but it’s rather about you having corner pinned things in at this point and some elements needing more dimension to make them sit right in space. I understand this is a concept, but I’ll point out general areas to pay attention to, in my opinion.
The far left side does not work for me yet.
The BG on screen left needs to be jimmied into perspective and
the entire right side could benefit from some more dimension, especially the ledges and window stuff.
Keep going, this is a really strong and clean WIP. Hope to see more from you soon.
Kind Regards,
Milan
Thanks for the notes Milan - i’l tweak some of those areas. New building on left - let me know your thoughts.
Still a fair bit of paint work left, some re-lighting, integration etc.
Rodolphe - thanks for the lighting reference. i like that idea, though I think i’m going for a gloomier, foggy look.
Hi Melaina, thought I recognised the name, love the stuff you did on GOT.
Feel a bit awkward about this, just noticed two things on your painting. On the left Rear building the windows are nearly the same size as the windows at the front of the painting. It throws the perspective size off. Also on the road is a noticeable removal of the original double yellow lines. Needs breaking up a bit more.
Everything else is fantastic, a truly non stylised production ready invisible matte.
Nice to see a professional on here, hope you do some more challenges.
Richie.
Hi Meliana,
I really like where you’re taking this… it’s coming along nicely.
One thing really stands out for me right now, although it’s pretty subtle: To my eye, the scale and slope of the right buildings are still a little off. The overall perspective seems OK, but the actual slope of the sidewalk looks a bit rigid, like it needs some up/down (mostly concave down) undulation. The original plate’s street has a concave downward slope (or at least seems to with the stepped sidewalk) and yet your building/street extension is straight as an arrow. Or… I could be completely wrong and the scale’s just off a little. Anyway, maybe you already realize this and are on it, but thought I’d mention it just in case you’re too eye sore like me to see your own work clearly.
Looking forward to seeing it done!
Thad
Unfortunately, I didn’t really get to spend as much time on this project as I would have liked. But thanks for the challenge guys - I enjoyed it.

Awesome piece! By far the most realistic I’ve seen here. Clearly the work of a industry professional.
The perspective is spot on, and great job on changing the lighting on the main building and the extension of the brick road.
Watched your show reel, and wow. Really impressive work! Especially like music you chose.
Congratulations· Very clean and overall a photo real look. My only critique would be the white edge on the church. Gj
Congratulations Melaina, lovely clean work here just needs actors comped in there.
And wow at your IMDB page… very impressive.
Guardians of the Galaxy had some spectacular environments, however you contributed to them you did an fantastic job because that film was off the charts awesome!
Wanted to finally chime in and congratulate you on the 1st place win this past month, Melaina, before it’s just old news. I like your painting, it has such a nice sense of photo-real clarity. That’s it’s strongest quality for me; the feeling that a live actor can walk into it and breathe fresh industrial revolution morning air. Hope you’ll continue to add your voice to these challenges.

Heyo Melaina,
Congrats on first place here! Had a chance to write up a critique and give some final notes on this. In general, the most solid and believable piece for me. Nice, bleak and soot haze filled portrayal of London without any people or anything, which you can add in live action/3D easily later on. You softened the shadows very well on the main house roof, with just a few technical issues I’ve pointed out in the image below (click/download for higher res):

Thanks for entering in the challenge and hope to see you more around!
