Dude, this is looking so sick.

The mood and atmosphere is just spot on. Really good job changing the lighting on the main building. Amazing!

Nice Job Dave. The overall composition works well and leads your eye from the building to the shoreline. The atmosphere and detail are a perfect match for the brief. The cross bracing at the foreground fence/railing looks odd to me if I stare at it too long, but overall this is a really successful matte painting.

Now animate it!

thanks for the comments… hmm the fence… have tried it with and without the mesh (mesh invented 1844) will let it sit a few days

I think this will be it for me, have a busy week ahead. I spent some more time trying to understand the perspective/angle of the outer edge buildings and the wide focal, think I’ve got it now. Anyways… final here, good luck everyone.

Looks amazing Dave. Love the composition, simple and effective.

thanks hemal  @rich ‘what the bollards?’ I left a few in… cloning out now

#27

awesome man ! love that mood ! and the port look really nice and old ! GJ

#28

thanks

so its always the way huh, fix one thing and another falls off! found that removing all the bollards just drew attention to the modern cobblestone work… its a shame since it was interesting but had to go… cheers dave

Love this buddy, can I come and visit? I really enjoyed reading and watching this come alive,

I would try to create some visual balance by selectively adding some window lights and lamps throughout the image. Currently, only the street lamp on screen right is on. Just try to add some little life and character to it. It’s coming along very impressively.

#31

thanks milan, yeah I wanted to work on it some more to liven things up but have run out of time… crazy week, so just spent an hour throwing lights at it and dirtied the street a bit  will have to sort properly next week after the deadline… great challenge.

Awesome Dave. The only thing is the fg stairs. It seems out of perspective. The rest of the image is awesome. Nice ambient color, cool bg, and a cloudy sky that matches London’s weather

#33

thanks for the comment… yeah the bridge, it may be a combination of a couple of things… it has a curved base (see below) plus that 18mm focal warps things pretty badly on the edges, but it was the only one I had and out of time to explore other options  cheers

#34

Dammit Dave… this looks totally and completely awesome! I’m impressed that it gets even better when viewing the hi-res, which isn’t always the case. So kudos, man, I really like your painting.

Heyo Dave,

You posted the highest res here, even though you didn’t have to. And the 4K came out pretty well! A few things to point out as I was looking at the 4K as presented. But of course, scaled down to 1080p, things would meld a bit more and you won’t have to worry as much about the blurry detail. However, things like matte edges and sharpness or black levels will still come into play at a lower res. Overall, I love the mood and the open water dock feel here. Great dynamic range and balance of overall black levels and colors. Nothing super too dark or too bright. And of course, great use of The Prancing Pony signs there  Bonus points in my book! Below is the familiar notes you got from when you took my workshop, click/download to see full res:

  • Some blurry elements as pointed out, slightly mitigated when down ressing to 1080p, but should still be looked at
  • Some textures that could be blurred up just slightly, left side
  • Some buildings that are just silhouettes and could use detail to match the other parts of the scene which has it
  • Black levels on the lower lamp post vs ground near docks could be balanced
  • Boat behind the lamp post is messing with the silhouette just a bit
  • The FG lamp post on the right is on, but it’s still mid day, and is just a bit too yellow. Could desat a bit.
  • Far left hand side could use darker black levels to separate elements in Z depth.

But overall great, congrats on second place here Dave!
