January 2015 - Dave Tipper

Hi all, a late start… was scratching around on a layout when malteblom posted a wip almost identical to mine, ( great minds think alike ) so I looked at other options but kept coming back to my first wip as I really want to explore a view opening up to the harbour and some ships, so heres first wip, cheers, dave

#2

and wip 2, not sure on the horizonline

#3

Great minds do indeed think alike.

Awesome work in progress man. Will try to deviate a little bit from my sketch as well.

#4

Well done,
imo u should use ships more like ‘19th century’ if u know what I mean  keep going!

#5

Lookin’ good! I’m diggin on the people that are going with this harbor idea. Nice work

#6

Nice mood !

#7

only if you want to? I dont think its a problem both doing a harbor reveal, all our extensions will be different, hey it could have been be in the brief  and its obvious to balance up the right with a building or tree or lampost or something,

thanks for the other comments guys, the spanish brigs have sailed off (they were built in 1840 tho)

cheers dave

#8

Beautiful. Nice sense of depth!

#9

Classy! Love the muted palette Dave.

#10

Nice!!
This is very clean and neat.

#11

Very fitting bleak feel to it. Have you tried experimenting with the compositional balance yet? The left side feels really closed off. Also, what type of window glass did they have in 1899 and who could actually afford what in London at that point? Just some thoughts…

#12

thanks for the tips milan, will work on the extensions left and right, not sure on windows… it appears the simple 2 piece sash was the go around that time? but I’m having trouble researching it… anyone got any good links? was also wondering why the camera was so high so had a look at street maps and that explains it

#13

updated wip… off to sort out my windows now

#14

I love the atmosphere! The idea of the port works well.

I feel that the panel with the horse is better in the final version, but the tangent between the bottom of the panels and the separation of the buildings attracts my eyes. Is it a desired effect?

#15

thanks for the comments, yeah not sure if I will leave in the ‘prancing pony’ signs… will probably replace them with something more authentic, but when I do will try to avoid the tangents (never noticed them till you pointed them out, cheers)
new wip

#16

changed out more windows… have been considering the heavy atmosphere in the sherlock style victorian london but then I loose the distance I want to have, dont know how far to take it… guess I have plenty of time to experiment

#17

I guess I did a number on you all again with this location. My bad. You seem to be coping pretty well though! I’m impressed. The staircase is a good idea but the railing feels slanted. Your perspective on it appears odd. Take another look at the entire FG element and try to jimmy it in a bit better. Your piece looks tons of fun.

#18

OMG! Truly fantastic work here man, very inspiring! Loving the mood you have established, so eerie and set perfectly with the time period. Your piece just looks very professional, high level of detail everywhere. Well done man

#19

thanks Milan, hmmm I see what you mean, its geo so tried a skew in PS but will render some more passes to see if I can get a better look… cheers Aaron, yeah fun piece to work on huh… hope you (and Rich) are well and back into it

Hi Dave, yes feeling a lot better now, really love this, my fave bit is the shoreline at the rear. I think the railing at the end needs to come down, its fighting the perspective, yes its accurate now, but a bit of artistic licence will help it. I would also remove the metal support that is the diagonal, its causing a optical illusion that makes feel distorted.

As for the mood, yes it has that dank stale vibe to it, love it.
