I’m pretty sure this is a very simple issue. I used the pen tool to create these linear elements, but I wasn’t careful and After effects combined these 4 elements into one layer. The problem is that I need each of those linear elements to be in its own respective layer so I can use the wiggle expression separately.
This is a screen shot of what I’m explaining, one layer, with a subgroup of two shapes. I want to be to be able to modifiy the position of each separately.

Group them in sub-groups? Since each group has its own transform and you can nest them infinitely, I see no problem here. After all, that’s what makes shape layers so flexible. if that is not what you want, duplicate the whole layer and delete elements you don’t need to get separate control…
