Is there GI a limitation when using the composition tag? [SOLVED]

#1

I’m having a motion tracked scene that follows a river.

The idea was to put some titles.

All is set correctly but when I render with GI I don’t get any reflections from my titles.

What am I missing ?

These are the Compositing Tags’ configuration for the river

And these are for the title

There is no point in having the tag on the title but left it there for future removal…

I’m using the Standard Renderer (Physical doesn’t work either) R20.028

Untick Compositing Background for HDR Maps on the river and add a light source such as Infinite Light to resolve the text being dark as in your screenshot. GI needs a light source of some sort.

No need for the title to have the compositing tag as you’ve noted either.

If that doesn’t resolve the problem, perhaps upload a simplified file that shows the issue.

You’ve also mentioned you’re using R20.028. There is an update to R20.059 you should apply as well.

I’ve tried to replicate the situation in a new scene and was surprised to not being able to replicate it.
So the only explanation was the circumstances in the original project … so I went back and cranked the reflectance of the river to 180 … and voila!

but … the thing is that my reflections are being rendered too bright although my titles are dark and it’s not the 180 value the issue.

So, I’m posting my test scene with all essential settings set to my original scene except the original textures which in reality is a video. I substituted the video with a blue-to-white gradient

Compositing Test.c4d (433.5 KB)

For now I’m not that irritated about the bright reflections but I would like to know the fix to this for future projects.

In the material called river, in the Reflectance channel go down to section called Layer Fresnel, choose Fresnel: Dielectric and Preset: Water.

You also need to activate the light in that scene (or another light source) to ensure the text is not dark.

I don’t care about the text being dark 'cause the scene is dark. I don’t have a GI and/or reflection reference so I feed the scene with the same video as a reflection and GI texture. The weird thing is the reflections on the river not being representative of the reflected object in terms of brightness. (I did play with the fresnel and nothing happened)

The problem lies in the colour channel of the river. That texture gives a more bright reflection because itself is bright but I can’t remove it because it will defeat the purpose of getting the composition tag working. Changing the mix mode gets more unintended results. Changing the Attenuation didn’t have noticeable effect.
