Is there a problem with the 'Rate This Thread' Option ?

#1

Today,me and many friend of mne tried to reply on many threda today, and to vote for them.

But only 5* option is available .
Not 4*, 3* , etc …

Is there a problem with that option?
Or is it a new way to vote works ( that would be to limited to me lol )

Please let us know :scream:

#2

i hope its new vote system. I mean you like it, or not. only five stars icons could be changed to something else.

#3

Thanks PiotrekM
I hope no .

Every works aren’t GOOD or only BAD …

It’s would be a bad system to ‘judge’ about a picture .

Or users would only look at 5* images … while other pictures would deserve to be view …

Definitively a bad system IMO

The old system was too open for abuse by spiteful users who were marking works 1 star because their own work gets ignored. This way, a percentage of “I like it” votes will result in the work getting starred, and its not possible to skew the rating by deliberately marking it down.

We’re still tweaking it to make it work better for everyone. If you have a suggestion, please post it in the suggestions forum.

Cheers.

Hello khendar,

Thank you for your reply

Okay so it’s a system modification. And I understand better about it ^^

I never tought about ‘spiteful users’ caus’ I can’t even imagine a user can put 1* to a work that looks good just because his own work isn’t starred .

Now I understand better, and the recent choice you did, seems logical .
Especially with the ‘I love it’ mention, that has more meaning than ‘5*’ .

So Khendar you changed my mind

Thanks again

I also would like to comment about that.

I too agree with Chokmah. This rate system is, in a way, too much approximate. As far as I’m concerned, I do like to vote for works, even if it’s bad or good. I mean you can have the right to give a 3, 4 or 5 stars to someone if you appreciate his work. That’s totally understanble. But as you said ealier Khendar, some people on this great forum that is cgtalk, abuse of the system itself:sad: and this must be punished.

Personnely, the system available right now, lacks interest. It comes back again to the previous issue. 5 stars or nothing… not enough appropriate.
Unfortunetely, I can’t help you out Khendar because I don’t have a real idea so solve that problem. I hope you guys find something concrete and fair.

Good luck to you:)

Thank you CGTalk! I’ve been asking for this format for a looong time.

#8

WyattHarris ,

I like this choice too now .

Especially, since the ‘I love it’ mention that looks more like an appreciation than a grade .

Especially since khendar explained the cause which make them to use this new rating system too

#9

Thank you, that’s wonderful!

I love the ‘like it’ option, now there’s no way to take anything away from a work out of spite, and as for the ‘shades’ of appreciation (the ‘I like it, but…’) one has the option to comment and offer something that is way more useful and constructive than a simple ‘3 stars’ without any stated reason.

I’ve kept away from the gallery for a while because of the rating system, just for the reasons you mention, I’ll definitely be back to voting and commenting now.

#10

The old system was also plagued with an equal share of ‘fanboy’ over rating as well.

At least the 1-star vandalism is over.

#11

oh man, this was needed so badly. guys.

#12

Awesome. I’m curious to see how this will affect ratings.

#13

in my opinion 2 option should be available, a choice between " good " and " excellent " .
3 stars is definetly not the quality of a 5 stars.

#14

I’m playing with the numbers in the backend still - I’ll likely shift to a slightly more gradient scale based on votes in a time-period if I can work out how to hack it into vbulletin.

I’ve also made some changes to who can vote - disallowing new users and users who have low contribution from voting.

#15

Always IMO, of course, but the distinction can be made, very simply, by commenting on the specific piece.

#16

Wow, I didn’t imagine my question could make such reactions ^^

So my question wasn’t so ridiculous hehe ^^

The best thing to me is to see CGTalk moderators and programmers so concerned about users .

Thanks a lot for that .

#17

Hi!

I was wondering the same thing so thanks for asking!

I have to agree that the new system is very good to prevent from abuse and as Thaldir stated, the difference between pieces can be made by simply posting comments.

The only thing I would have to say about this is that I’ve been looking through the 3D stills gallery pages and I have noticed that people post less and less comments about work. It is not rare to see threads with 2000 views and only 2 comments. (I can be the first to blame as I never/very rarely post by lack of time but I think you see what I mean)
I’m not saying I was a fan of the star system but with the lack of comments, I think it was a good way (even though very approximate) to know and have a general opinion of what was produced.

Thanks again for asking the question!

Guillaume

i was always so irritated to see a great image getting 3 stars and an brilliant image never getting 5 stars! Thank you so much for trying to changing this!
Still, IMHO it seems like another extreem to have so many images with 5 stars. Maybe the stars should be determened by how many people vote “i love it”. 10 people 3*, 20p 4*, 40p 5* or something like this?

#19

We’re kind of hoping that people will stop relying on the star rating as a reference and actually read and post comments more often. Stars are largely useless in terms of constructive feedback. We’d much prefer people actually take the time to comment politely and constructively on pieces they view.

Perhaps that’s too much to ask

hello. . . 5 stars or nothing . . . it looks like a very strong way of judging. Its like American Idol auditions, people like it or you are out. Maybe its a new way of competition that is coming really more stronger as technology and people are more and more interested on CG Developments.

So you have to battle even more stronger to reach high standards of evaluation to get into the elite of great CG artists all around the world.

But I agree with Mr. Delarque, cheers to you by the way friend, I agree with you.
