Is it okay to model something with an n-gon cap (cylinders, cones, etc.)?

This question keeps popping up to me and I’m curious about it. I’ve seen tutorial videos with people modeling cylinders with n-gon caps (such as a simple mug or cup), but I’ve also been told and taught that n-gons are bad. So would this just be an exception to the rule or not. I’m looking for some opinions/answers on this.

The answer is simple: ys, it’s ok, provided the polygons are coplanar.
it concerns subdivision surfaces for viz.
If the model will be animated and deformed at that area, one ought to stick with quads for better deformation.
If you model a lowpoly for games, it’s a different matter. In the latter case one would make few polygons, maybe connected rectangles.
Generally if you’\re just doing a viz model, make sure a sub-d model doesn’t have aftifacts when subdivided, coplanar polys can be of any kind. Just don’t make it a mess, but don’t spend too much time refining. It’s not really important, as nothing happens bad when you subdivide such coplanar polys.
