So I don’t know what to do. Learn Nuke or after effects. I’ve learned myself the basics of after effects and I get the impression it’s more for motion graphics and videocopilot-ish visual effects that you create on your own, I don’t really find them that good within the film industry(videocopilot), I get the impression that they’re just good for a reel to enter a vfx school and not a vfx job, besides who got the time to make those videocopilot effects when there’s a close deadline. I got to learn shake, and I really prefer nodebased ones instead of layers; it feels like I have no controlls working in layers. But it feels like i’m working much much faster with after effects than shake, but only within the do-to-fast list.
In school we’re learning after effects now, but only doing those motion graphic animations, very southpark-ish. But I don’t know how much I want to invest my time on this after effect class because it’s mostly about animations. I’d be really glad if someone convinced me why I should really care about after effects when nuke can do the same thing, but maybe slower(?). Notice i’m thinking of working with movies and not commercials.
Is it even worth the time learning after effects?
Hi
i think after effect is realy good for motion design, it’s true.
Also it’s true that after effects is not the best for pure vfx compositing.
One the first thing is bad in after for compositing is the poor option for
masking.
Impossible to adjust feather as u can do it in Flame or combustion or shake
cause only one outline, so for fine tuned masking and rotoscoping with after
it’s not very the best point of this soft
. ( and i think it’s stupid from adobe to not give this possibilitie, i am using cs2, don’t know about cs3 or cs4!), Also the tracking engine and color keyer are much more better in discreet and shake.
But After is a good very popular and with enormous plug in featrures avaible.
It can do a lot of good work, even for VFX, it’s a complementary tools.
That u should pratctice too, in any case.
I think and it’s the point of view of a motion graphic after effect user.
That COMBUSTION is good software for practicing VFX compositing.
Node based structure and it’s the opendoor for discreet system as:
INFERNO, FLAME, SMOKE, LUSTRE, etc…
SHAKE is also a very good option.
Apple is the actual owner and it seem to be for the moment in a arrested development state. But who know what can happen.
And i absolutly don’ t know anything about NUKE.
Good luck
I use AE all the time for broadcast compositing and its more than capable. It might not be quite as powerful as Nuke and Flame etc… but its a superb package.
One thing i would say is that if you are looking to get a job in VFX comping, then maybe think about lerning something like Nuke or maybe even Digital Fusion (not sure about how common that one is).
But AE is found everywhere, is very well supported (great plugins)and is very capable…
