Are 3d sculpting programs such as Zbrush and sculptris sort of “cheating” compared to modeling from scratch in Maya or 3dsMax? In other words, it feels much easy to model in 3d sculpting programs than it does in say Maya. It seems way quicker and easier to create realistic models in say Zbrush than it does in lead industry software packages.
Is it cheating to model in 3d sculpting software?
Funny
So! Non of them are cheating. All depends on what you are gonna useing it. So if it’s a concept without textures then it’s fine to show what have you created in zbrush. If you want to make textures for it, than you probably have to retopologize it, make UV… So non of them are cheating, they simply just depends on what purpose you gonna use it later.
There’s no such thing as cheating in art. There’s only a final product that is either aesthetically sound or not. The value of art is in the art itself, not the process of getting there. The process is a matter of intellectual curiosity - no more. So that’s that soapbox, but even that aside, every artist should use the tools that are the most conducive to getting the job done. Sculpting is not inherently easier. I mean, it is for me because I have a sculpture’s mind and hands, but for someone more engineering minded, modeling makes way more sense. So if modeling is easier for you, are you cheating by modeling?
Anyway, those are my 2 cents
I prefer to create characters and other organic shapes in Zbrush first. It is a great conceptual tool for a lot of things. And even for some hard surface things as well. A lot of people use it as a design tool because it is so fluid.
How much different is Zbrush to sculptris… I am using sculptris and I am loving this way of modeling.
sculptris is basically Zbrush LT. From a sculpting stand point they’re pretty similar, but Zbrush is more feature packed
Look up some of those 3d packages price’s and see who’s cheating who.
the difference is that mudbox wants to be more like zbrush
