Intro to Carnivale

#1

I’ve been trying to find out anything I can about the techniques used to make the intro to Carnivale-- the HBO series.
All I have found out is that - perhaps- it was done using Discreet- though I’m not sure that matters-
I’m trying to imitate it in after effects and maya.

I have seen this technique used frequently- all to frequently and usually not very well- since the series won all its awards. I guess this is the new Matix effect.
Anyway any hints would be apreciated

PS :
if perhaps I should post this in a different forum, please leave suggestions.

Thanks

this is 3d compositing. imagine moving into photoshop layers and being able to rotate them on more than one axis.

this is one fundamental workflow that combustion, flint, flame and smoke all do.

I would like to know what they used as well. I think its a fantastic intro and along with the music it really sets the tone about what the show is about. Season 2 has bee AMAZING and I can’t wait to see the season finale. I just hope it isn’t the series finale like all the talk thats going around.
