Into the mouth of Gnomon

#1

Hi there
I just watched the “Neville Page volume 4: Rendering Flesh” DVD from Gnomon.
What can I say? Absolutely fantastic!!
Anyway, I found a great link for suitable references I thought people might like.
That’s all :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks for the heads up on this DVD, there are a couple of Gnomon DVD’s that i want, and i wondered if you would had tried any of the other one’s out?

Hello, MarGera,
I just want to let you know that I’ve paied for ALL the gnomon DVD tutorials for maya and I recived very poor resolution shit , so that I could not use them ( I tried hard to watch them, but , after 5 of them, I gave up) I belive that the teachers are good, but they don’t know video techniks to put their work on a DVD.
I wrote them to complain about this , and about the fact that in their presentation they were speaking about a good resolution (and the print Screens on their web page showed a good resolution as well) … but I recived no money back , as it would have be normal to , nore another DSD’s with a better resolution.
I am deeply deceived and… it was a total waste of money … it was a pure theft. I simply can’t belive what some people could do , just to get someone other trust and …money.
As for you… you make your oun decision… ask another people that bought Gnomon Dvd’s and … try to get better informed that I, ( stupid me ! ) did.

i own every single analog dvd from gnomon and have no resolution issues… i get a discount and a few of them were gifts so they even applied my discouts to anyone ordering for me ( to be shipped to my address) i stand by gnomon as a great company and quality material

Kraal,

I’m glad for you , really. When did you buy them ?
What DVDs are you talking about?
I ordered them one year ago and… somehow, I’ve been cheated.
I can’t stop thinking that you got good resolution dvd because you could complain better than me for you are a US citizen and Gnomon is based in the States…so you are better protected by the federal laws.
I am romanian (and not an walthy one , I borrowed money for the dvds and I payed for them one year … You can imagine my discontent and frustration )… I can not pursuite in instance such a remote company… especially an american one.

I am going to have to defend TheGnomonWorkshop dvd’s as they truly are FANTASTIC instructional materials. All of the instructors are Well Known PRO’s with years of experience. Many of them have donated time to CGSOCIETY.ORG and have appeared in “meet the artist” threads. I have almost all of the digital dvd’s series and a good chunk of the analog dvd series. Hopefully I will have everything by the end of the year. They are well worth the price as you get QUALITY instruction on theory and practice that exceeds alot of the schools out there.

It is important to note that all of the analog dvd’s and some of the OLDER digital dvd sets were intended to be viewed from a dvd play hooked up to a standard television. So obviously if you play back on your pc the quality will appear lower since it’s tv resolution. The quality on those older titles is still good enough for you to see what they are doing and since most of the dvd’s focus on theory, it’s what is being said that is important.

All the gnomon Dvds for the past year or so have been made with quicktime movies for play back on your computer at 1024x768 resolution and the quality is perfect (you must use the specifed codecs). I’m sorry to hear that you didn’t even bother with learning from the many dvd’s that you purchased. I hope you sold them to someone who would use them.

this worries me slightly…
I have just ordered a shed-load of Gnomon digital DVD’s…

They will be with me shortly- so I will report back once I have watched them…

The Gnomon DVD’s are absolutley the best! I’m not just saying this because I was lucky enough to win the digital set in the Spectacular challenge either! My students and I find them an invaluable resource.
Have no fear in ordering them. The resolution is good. The instruction is good. The company is good. (even the audio is good. Something that is definitely not the case with some competitors dvds)

Cosky , I respect your point of view, and I agree that they are good techers.I couldn’t watch them, that’s all. It was trully bad for my eyes.
I disliked the fact that you said that I didn’t bother to use them, this is sort of a caustik thing to say, cause, obviously, you’re not in my shoes. I bothered way to much, in my opinion. Thanks anyway for the answer, it’s good to know that not everybody feel as I do , … maybe not evrybody got what I got… Maybe I’m just the most unfortunate of all… I hope for everybodyelse that mine is an unique, singular story.
Bradw… what can I say … I hope that , at least, what we are writing here is seen by the guys at gnomon and that they would pay more attention to the stuff they sell .
Please, let me know what you’ve got for your money. … I’m the kind of person that preferes to belive in accidents (, let the worst happen to me, never mind, ) than to belive that people can be ( that ) dishonest.
If you want me to, I could try to post for you a Screen shot of one of the DVDs… or I could email it to you, so you can see with your eyes what I saw.
Whatever suits you best.

posting would be helpful if you can.
I got my FedEx notice today via email from Ballistic telling me that they are on their way…

I bought:

1 x Digital Sets 1: Design, Modeling & Camera DVD
1 x Digital Sets 2: Lighting & Texturing DVD
1 x Digital Sets 3: Rendering & Compositing DVD
1 x Mental Ray: Fundamentals DVD
1 x Mental Ray: Lighting & Shaders DVD

I’ve never bought any training kit before (in 10 years of using 3d software for college/work) and this time I concede defeat. I have winged it for so long…
too much to learn in terms of technical know how, and so much is terribly documented by Alias, whats with all the abstract stuff? Give us more real world basic tutorials Alias!, that I’m gonna need Gnomon to help me set these things up correctly so that when I come to transfer my portfolio concepts to 3d scenes (maya) I hopefully won’t have to worry too much about being unable to realise my ideas as the tools are SO complicated now.
I am certainly feeling ‘old’ in term of 3d apps… in games you only use a small small portion of what these monster apps are capable of.
Plus- I need to build a portfolio from scratch… mine is YEARS out of date as I have devoted all my time to churning out production work…

DUSSO’S - Introduction to digital matte painting, is a great DVD for begginers in digital painting.

  • The resolution problem going on at the moment, i found it wasnt all that good myself. Having 2 use the ZOOM function on my TV and Monitor, to see most of it. This is due to the fact i bought photoshop DVD’s and the teacher was zooming out while painting. The sound i found wasnt that great either, had to turn my system up quite abit to get reasonable sound. But overall ide recommend the DVD’s, the resolution and sound where not BIG problems, and wouldn’t stop me buying more.

I have every single Gnomon dvd I have no problems whatsoever with the resolution.

#13

I like Dussos training but I prefer Dylan Cole. I don’t know but his way of teaching is the best!!!

#14

xGoodyx- do you have any favourites amongst them?

which is the most invaluable to you?
general question I know… but Im trying to distract myself from the fact that they are on their way vai FedEx! yay :bounce:

I love the Gnomon products but I’ve been exploring other vendors as well. I signed up for a monthly membership at vtc.com. I’m really impressed by the Maya 6 Fundamentals (I’m a 3D n00b). It doesn’t go overboard on modeling and has a great section on rigging and basic animation which is something that interests me. I’m eyeing the Kurv Studios dvds too. There’s a sale on I think 40% off.

Just bought the Bob Kato DVD “Drawing the Adult Male Head”.Cant wait,it looks like such a great dvd.

#18

You are in for a good time. Bob is a fantastic teacher. I was so impressed by volume 3 I went back and bought 1 and 2. He shows you how to build up a drawing and he clearly describes an easy to remember proportion system for laying out the head. I didn’t realize how badly I was drawing heads until I watched Volume 1. Bob is a really nice guy too. I emailed him through his Drawing Club website and he was nice enough to offer his time if I had any questions.

Have fun!

Roger
