Internet Based Graphics Studios

I recently started an internet-based graphics and programming business and am trying to find out what kind of technologies are out there for developing 3D graphics over the internet, where the project would be stored on a remote server and the artists/programmers would work on it just like any classic database.

It seems like the hardware and software is available to make a completely internet-based CGI studio possble, but I haven’t found anything like that yet. Is there some key problem with this idea that I am missing?

If there isn’t, and the problem is simply that not enough software has been developed for such a purpose, then I am very interested in creating such a software solution.

whats your setup at the studio do you have at least render farm also you net connection would need to be at least t1 or better i would assume to transfer files an data also an asset traking system so people can check in an out file an update file an reworking files. also what software are you using.

Actually, the current scope of my company is much smaller than that. Right now I am making mostly short, television/demo level graphics that do not require a render farm, though I hope that one day my business will be large enough to afford one.

As far as a T1 connection, that would be nice, but since the only data being transferred would be models, scenes, and textures, T1 would not be neccisary, at least for the beginning.

I admit that I do not know much about asset tracking systems, and that sounds like the direction I’m looking for, so I’d like to find out more about that. How does such a system compare/relate to a client/server model of data storage?

I’ve been using Lightwave, but am looking into switching to Softimage for it’s unnaturally robust SDK. (C# and Python are my current languages of choice) But which app I’m using isn’t even so much an issue because I’ll probably wind up creating a system that supports multiple 3D apps.

There’s a CG-oriented asset-tracking product available called Alien Brain.
I use Subversion (specifically TortoiseSVN) which works fine for me, but I’m a programmer, so it may not fit your needs. It is free, quite robust, and optimized for handling binary files over slowish connections.
