Inferno or Avid DS Nitris - which to learn

#1

hi there!
i’ve been offered a job in two production houses and i dont know which to choose. in one company i will be able to learn Inferno. in another Avid DS. any tips? help? i dont want to make any mistake…
which one is more popular?
pros and cons on both?
what are the salaries for Avid DS artists?

thanks for any information from you, compositing gurus.

cheers,
bn.

It depends what sort of work you want to do. DS is more editing biased. For fx and design its a no-brainer. I would whole heartedly recommend learning inferno. In my limited experience with ds it seemed inferior in every way to discreets powerhouse box.

inferno is an awesome peice of equipment really the pinnacle of compositing in a lot of ways.

its real strength is it’s processing power and brilliant tool kit which includes the best tracker and keyer bar none on the market. coupled with an awesomely powerful 3d compositing environment camera tracking, editing and time remapping tools and soooo much more !

as for salaries. Well to start off take whatever you can get. Once you can use it then you can start making some REAL cash. Good inferno opps are worth an absolute packet and get treated very well by companies who want their skills.

And for god sake PLEASE tell me how you got so lucky as to be offered not just a chance at getting on the box but the choice !?!?!

hi Aneks
thanks for your contribution.
i would like to concentrate on a hardcore compositing. and to have a nice perspective for future jobs. what i mean is that DS is IMHO not that much popular. at least in EU?
in the company that i would be learning DS they also have Flame… so i could lurk on the Discreet systems too.

and to answer your questions… well… i’ve just sent my reel to a lot of companies. and it looks like i was in the right place, at the right time. maybe i should write a book “compositing - how to get a job” lol…

thanks again.

any more tips?

CMI studios has a DVD set of tutorials about learning Flame (Inferno is practically identical, but adds Motion (retiming) and uses more processors).

Flame/Inferno is also more scalable than DS-- DS has it’s hardware which is not upgradable. With Flame/Inferno, you can add Burn render stations to increase rendering/processing speed.

If you are going for composting, also learn Shake/Fusion.

that means i’ll prolly go for Inferno/Flame. thx

maybe we should see this reel

like Aneks says, DS is more of an editing suite, it does seem to have some nice features. we got two here, not that i use em, blah i’m no editor.

so for compositing YES go discreet err autodesk
