In Need of Wisdom and Guidance

#1

Greetings Fellow Artists!

My name is Giancarlo and I am an artist who has a need for assistance and wisdom from artists familiar with 3D modeling and design. A quick background on my abilities and current situation I think is important as I have some limitations that those assisting need be aware of. In short my problem is something I’m sure would be covered in a semester or two in a relative artistic course, however I am convalescing from several surgeries and non-ambulatory at present (a story for another time) so going to school is out of the question, however school coming to me is acceptable, granted with a little direction from someone versed in distance learning. In all of my past investigations into distance learning and online courses none are robust or quality enough to compare with the tried and true. Additionally none that I researched were truly 100% online, a visit to the campus was mandatory for either day 1 or the last day to satisfy the requirements of the class or financial aid or some such crap. I’m hoping that maybe in the last few years things have changed and what I seek might be available now.

I am a Sci- Fi fan in love with many franchises but what I really, really love is the spaceships, ski fi tech, and all things that aid you in travel through space. All of my art is generally of sketches found in this genre. I have other areas I dabble in artistically like graffiti, tribal tattoo flash, and most recently cryptozoology. I am most familiar with Google Sketch up and Photoshop and when I am not drawing freehand I use an old Wacom tablet to sketch in Photoshop but all of my learning in digital art is self-taught through trial and error and from viewing as many of internet tutorials I can fit into a day
or that I can understand in some respects. I’ve come to learn that being a great artist doesn’t mean you can be a great art teacher.

What it is that I truly require is the most direct way to take what my imagination through my mind’s eye sees and putting that on the screen for all to see. I see full colored, weathered vehicles and vistas on my favorite website www.conceptships.blogspot.com and I need to know how these awesome artists get it done. It’s obvious that many different skills, programs, and workflows are being shown and no two artists work the same, but the basic knowledge of
Modeling, than skinning (?) the model and then I guess rendering it only grasped by me at its most basic nature. I not asking anyone to do my work for me but I need to be directed to the right artists who may have downloadable, purchasable or stream able step by step instructions I could learn from. I am always sketching concept Star Trek ships that I start in sketch up but never get my creation to look polished or even realistic, at least not like the stuff this awesome artist whose work I adore http://conceptships.blogspot.com/2014/01/ecm-capable-tech-bomber-by-alexey-pyatov.html If anyone has anything of true value to offer, I thank you in advance and hope to be able to repay you in kind.

If you have a question or problem you seek a solution or insight to even if not art related, I am more than willing to assist especially if it is something of which I am knowledgeable in, which of course you have no way of knowing outright but rest assured if I don’t know I’ll tell you… lol.
