Improve Render Time (Hardware Upgrade)

#1

Ok so my friend and I run a very small rendering business(just us two) and some of our renders did take awhile to render, but those were high project complexity. What I’m wanting to do is upgrade my computers hardware to hold me over until I can get a tesla GPU (for Maximus).

Question: Which component would improve overall lighting and bucket render times? Assuming we use the same scene ect…

Render: Currently we use Mental Ray for most projects, but we will switch to iRay later.

My System Configuration(Frankenstein Computer)
CPU: AMD FX-8120
RAM: AMD Entertainment (2x4gb)
GPU1: Radeon 6870(1gb)
GPU2: Quadro 4000(2gb)
MOBO: Will be upgraded if need be
OS: Windows 8(64-bit)

**Yes I’m running the 6800 and 4000 at the same time. However MAX and other applications can NOT take advantage of the CUDA ect, because it’s being viewed as a display card. So 3DS Max will only use it if I remove the AMD card from the case.

Daily Used software:
Photoshop
3DS Max
Inventor
SolidWorks

Here are the parts I’m looking at, but cash is tight right now (returning this FALL for college) so I wanted to know if someone had info on which component would give me the most improvement for scenes in MAX.

Here are a few problems I have, once a model approaches 5.3million polys MAX will stop responding, taking several (15s avg) to update screen movement. I use a 3D Connexion mouse to navigate. At this point it makes it impossible to have PS or anything else open as it uses 100% of my CPU just for viewport. While it only uses 55%<(8gb RAM).

I’ve never had an intel processor so I’m not sure what the upgrade would do. I know we’ll use Mental Ray for quite awhile, which wouldn’t be able to take advantage of the Quadro. However I also know having 2 NVidia cards > 2 different cards. Plus the viewport can use one GPU and the render can use a different one (Mental Ray setup)

Hardware Upgrades
CPU: i5-4590S
GPU: 750Ti 2(GB)(I know this has its pros and cons, not really made for rendering but working on a budget)
RAM: 4gb (would put system total at 12gb)

Sorry for the length, just wanted to make my “issue” clear
