The obj mesh I imported from XSI 7 (~20,000 faces, all quads from what I can tell) is converting to tris in mudbox 2009, then when I subdivide to level 1 it looks like they are all converted to quads again (then it also has the same number of quads as the original mesh in XSI). What is going on? The original mudbox didn’t do this with the exact same mesh. Does it really matter? It doesn’t seem to affect sculpting after subdividing, and the imported UV seems to be ok too, but I don’t want to spend a bunch of time on this and have an unseen problem later.

By tris you mean shading is showing tris? If thats the case you have triangle or n-gon in your mesh. Turn wireframe mode on in Mudbox to see if polys actually tris or quads.

Sorry, took a while to respond. I don’t know what was going on. I got a new computer, reinstalled Mudbox and now everything is fine.
