iMac for Design, Animation and Rendering

#1

I am looking at getting a workstation for Maya 2018, After Effects and the Adobe design packages.
This is what I am looking at getting for Professional animation work and rendering.
Model Identifier: iMac16,2
Processor Name: Intel Core i5
Processor Speed: 2,8 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 8 GB
Will this be good enough to animate, render and deliver animation projects on time?

What’s the budget?

No, this computer is effectively a toy for what you want to do. It’s a 2015 model.

4 cores? In 2019? It’s a laptop CPU to boot, extra-slow for mobile.

Only 8GB of memory?

It doesn’t even have a graphics card. Intel’s iGPU onboard graphics are NOT powerful enough for Maya, and won’t accelerate Adobe’s software either.

You’d be better off just using your phone. Apple hasn’t caught up to modern computers and they never will. For the price of that machine you could easily build or buy something 4-10x faster and still save money for a decent monitor. Time to move on.

What you should be looking at is 8-core/16 thread CPUs and a real graphics card, and at least 16GB of RAM. You should be looking at a Ryzen setup with a Geforce 1050 at least.
