IK rig - pin position on both ends -> control FK joints in between

#1

Hello

I have a linear object rigged that has 6 joints. It is floor mounted.

Id like to be able to control it through IK to find a location in space of the 6th joint. Then lock this 6th joint down and switch to FK to adjust the other joints within the range of motion.

Is this possible? The rig is not built from the bottom up with FK, then I added an IK joint from the bottom most joint to the top most joint after.

How can i build a rig that after setting a position in space with IK will then lock down at both ends and respond to FK. No stretching… only rotation.

Thanks for any help.

I can almost imagine it, if you had a diagram or video link I could probably help.

Use one joint chain for the binding, then build at least two other join chains; one for the IK and another as FK. Then have your bound chain parented to the IK and the FK and you’ll be able to blend between them. You can put another chain between the bind chain and the IK/FK blending chain that is seperated joints parented to you IK/FK joints in Null Groups (groups that are parented to the output of IK+FK and then have a single joint inside them). Then you can just move those anyway you like for some extra control that’s separated from the IK/FK nodes … just move them anyway you like.

You can also do something like use an IK Spline setup for this.
