ICE Plug-in - emFluid2

#1

Hi everybody,

until about a week ago I used to post in the good old Softimage Community… but those days seem to be over, what a shame. But life goes on and I guess I will post here a little!

So what does this ICE plug-in do?
Here a brief description and some screenshots:

emFluid2 is a basic fluid solver for Softimage's ICE and is typically used to produce smoke and fire effects.
The plug-in consists of a "DLL" file (Windows) or "so" file (Linux) for the fluid solver node (compiled C++ code for 32 bit and 64 bit versions of XSI). Additionally, there are several compounds that come along. They allow you to plug objects and/or their geometry into the emFluid2 node or compound.

Looks pretty cool!!!

Thanks for sharing,

Hi, just a short post to share a link to a nice commercial spot for which emFluid2 was used.
The spot was made by John Payne, who also sent me the YouTube link.
It features nice particle animations and -as a sort of bonus- pretty women

Hi there,

here’s a lovely little anim from Ciaran M.:

Ciaran’s Ray Marching (implemented in ICE!) + emFluid2 + emRenderPoinCloud, a great work as I think!

You can watch the anim here on Vimeo.

cheers
Eric

Amazing Stuff…the self shadows makes this look so nice. When will we see self shadows in EMPCR Mootzoid?..that is all that is missing from your kickass Compound

Well done Ciaran

#6

This looks awesome!

#7

@Werner:

Self-Shadowing is on the emRenderPointCloud To-Do list, but I’m currently working on something else so it will have to wait a little before I implement it into emRPC.

cheers,
Eric

My God, this looks good! I was wanting something similar a while back. Now all I need is an excuse to do a similar project again. Clients and their timing… will check out the demo some time!

#9

I thought EmFluid could do liquids also…why no mention of that?

#10

Sorry, emFluid2 only does gases and smoke. I admit the name can lead to confusion. In physics liquids and gases are both are called “fluids”, hence the plug-in’s name.

#11

Oh, but what was that thing you guys were working on that did water and liquids? I thought I saw lots of vimeo vids with tests of liquids pouring…or was that some other guys?

Anyway, I have a project coming up in which I have to make gas flowing through a house, and make it look almost alive. This tool might be great for that.

@ adrencg :

Ah, okay, I guess you were thinking about Thiago Costa’s SPH, a different technique (good for liquids, but not good for gases).

There also is this demo animations (liquid pouring into a glass) of my other plug-in emPolygonizer

Hi everyone!

A few days ago I got the “go” from François V. - a frenchman who just finished his graduate thesis film called “Amock” - to show some extracts of it in which emFluid2 was used. It’s a really cool “B-movie + The Evil Dead + Young students discover something creepy in the basement” short-film. I just love that kind of stuff! Of course it has nice CG to look at. The short film is not yet available for everybody as it will first be screened on several film festivals, more information can be found on this web site: www.amock.fr.

Here’s the link to go watch the extract à la emFluid2 and a screenshot:

have fun!

Hi people!

As you of course already know Softimage 2010 has been released.
With a new XSI / Softimage release often come changes in the SDK which can affect compiled plug-ins such as emFluid2, emRenderPointCloud and emPolygonizer.

Here a brief description of known compatibility issues concerning the above mentioned plug-ins and Softimage 2010:

[ul]
[li] emFluid2 (and emRenderPointCloud?)[/li]
Unfortunately there are some severe issues for at least emFluid2 when trying to edit its nodes or compounds in the ICE Tree. These issues are NOT due to the plug-ins but to a bug in Softimage/XSI 2010.

I already mailed with Softimage a few weeks ago, so they are aware of the bug and I am hopeful of a fix in the near future.

In fact, the most recent beta version of Softimage already has the bug fixed, but I don’t know when (and if) Softimage/Autodesk will release it’s next version / service pack.
[li] emPolygonizer[/li]
This one exists in two different versions, one for XSI 7.01 and XSI 7.5 and one for Softimage 2010.

In other words: this plug-in works fine with Softimage 2010.
[/ul]Cheers,
Eric

Eric,

I am confused 2010 beta? Is this an old version?

Is this what your saying?

a) if you have em- emFluid and or emRenderPointCloud and SI_2010
as it stands right now…they wont work.

Until a service pack is done for SI 2010.

Cheers
Terry

#16

Mootz any chance for an emrpc update (selfshadowing…) ?

cheers

#17

Hi Terry,

okay, with “beta” I of course mean the most actual version, in other words a version newer than the current official release of Softimage 2010. This would be something like the beta version of a (maybe!) coming service pack. As I said: the bug is known by the Softimage Team and already has been fixed (those guys are good and fast!). So let’s just hope that there will be a 2010 Service Pack. Future will tell…

So yes, the issues I in the previous post concern the current official release of Softimage 2010.

Cheers
Eric

Hi Piotrek,

yup, an update of emRenderPointCloud is planned for january/february 2010.
The good news: “self shadowing” is on my list of cool things I’d like to implement

cheers
Eric
