I am stuck with masking a sphere for an ecosystem

Help!

Hey all,

I am trying to apply a mask to a sphere that will allow me to put two distinct ecosystems on it, one of the left and one on the right but I am having a wee bit of trouble getting my head around it. I actually needed three across the thirds of a sphere but would be happy to just get it 50 / 50

Can anyone suggest a method to tell me how I would achieve this sort of masking for an ecosystem result.

Create a mixed material, with an eco for each material. For 50/50 control the distribution with an image, half white half black.
